| August 25, 2006: Matched up against Rollin' Ice's most dominant team, Franchise Hockey refused to sink in a 10-1 loss. The final score did not reflect the odds and hardships the Franchise overcame to stand up to the league's best team and make a pre-playoff statement. With David McGrouther, Ray Cleverly, Dara Rahimzadeh and Daniel Lees all becoming unavailable at the last second, the Franchise had a daunting task at hand. Fortunately, they received a boost in the form of Kit McCavitt. Having announced his retirement last Friday, McCavitt opted to return to the team for the remainder of the season. McCavitt's presence helped spark the Franchise which was running low on defensemen. Robby Merk and Matt King provided the team's offensive punch, hooking up on the lone goal. King centered a pass to Merk, who buried his third of the season. Franchise Hockey was forced to use a replacement goaltender. While the replacement played well, he ultimately could not hold Saint Teresa to single-digits. Defeneman Sheraj Ragoobeer played his strongest game of the season, as he picked up the slack in the midst of an equipment problem. Merk was forced to sit the second period with a broken skate. For the third, he used Chris Cornelius' skates and scored. The two game playoffs will be held next Friday. Franchise Hockey will face the ninth seed. Box Score: 3rd Period: Merk 3 (King) Goaltending: Replacement (10 GA) Captain's Thoughts: Were they the best team in the league? Yes. Did we hang with them? Absolutely. Should anyone be hanging their heads after a winless regular season? Not a chance. This game was symbolic of the entire year. We put up a helluva fight and played our hearts out. Ultimately, we lacked the experience and speed to win. However, we grew together, we developed chemistry, and we're beginning to form a winning nucleus. Getting Kit back was huge. Kit runs our defense, so having him for the remainder of the year will be a huge advantage. Additionally, Sheraj and Robby are playing their best hockey of the year. The playoffs are next week. If we can address the goaltending situation and bring out strongest skaters, we can pull the upset. Read the tagline. BELIEVE.- Your Captain #37 |
