The Ghost Town of View Cove, Dall Island, Alaska
View of Track and Powerhouse from Dock

What is now the Ghost Town of View Cove on Dall Island, Alaska, located in South Eastern Alaska, about 45 miles west of Ketchikan, and about 6 miles southwest of Hydaburg, which is located on Prince of Wales Island. View Cove operated as a limestone quarry camp where crushed limestone was quarried and shipped to Seattle, WA where it was made into Portland Cement. It operated a an active quarry from about 1928 to about 1942 when it was shut down because of World War II.

A railroad track ran from the dock up the hill at a near 45 degree angle.

Supplies, such as dynamite, were hauled on a 4' x 6' four wheel cart

from the dock to the upper level by a cable pulled by a donkey engine.

The power house as it appeared in 1938.

The power house as it appeared in 1985. Most of the buildings had been covered with transite siding (a very durable building material made out of asbestos and cement). The transite has been removed from all buildings along with most of the lumber and timbers. None of the buildings had been burned but apparently had been dismantled and carted away.
