The Ghost Town of View Cove, Dall Island, Alaska
View of Interior of Powerhouse

What is now the Ghost Town of View Cove on Dall Island, Alaska, located in South Eastern Alaska, about 45 miles west of Ketchikan, and about 6 miles southwest of Hydaburg, which is located on Prince of Wales Island. View Cove operated as a limestone quarry camp where crushed limestone was quarried and shipped to Seattle, WA where it was made into Portland Cement. It operated a an active quarry from about 1928 to about 1942 when it was shut down because of World War II.

One of the two Diesel Engines as they appeared in 1938.
Most of the machinery in the quarry was powered by electric motors. The Electricity was generated by two large diesel engines..

The Large Diesel Engines as They Appeared in 1985.

The Failbanks Morse Electric Generator as it Appeared in 1985.

This four clyinder Fairbanks Morse engine generated electricity during the evenings and on Sunday to produce electricity for household use. Many times it was so overloaded that it ran so hot that the clyinder head glowed in the dark. Often times when it was shut down it would run backwards , going 'bang, bang", for several minutes before it would finaly stop. The first time I saw this happen, I thought it would never start again but it did start the next day and did good service for many years.
