| Mary Catherine Hagarty and John Wayne Crawford were married on April 2, 1940 at St. Mary's Church in Greene, Iowa. They began farming on the Crawford Family farm in Black Hawk County until moving to a farm in Floyd County, 2 1/2 miles Northeast of Marble Rock. In 1954 they moved to Liberty Township in Buchanan County, Southwest of Winthrop, where they live today. Catherine wanted no notoriety for the number of children in her family. She simply went about the tasks of raising seventeen children in a manner that made the entire community marvel. Catherine and Wayne stressed the importance of religion, hard work, discipline, and sharing with their children. They were much more at ease talking about the accompishments of the family than about themselves. Catherine and Wayne were honored in 1978 as Parents of the Year at Iowa State University in Ames. There was a Crawford family member attending ISU for twenty consecutive years from 1964 through 1984. In the Fall of 1972, six brothers were enrolled at ISU at one time, setting an all-time record for the University. Additionally, there have been 4 grandchildren graduate from Iowa State and 3 are currently enrolled at the University. Since their children have grown, they've enjoyed grandchildren, attending daily mass, reading, caring for plants and flowers, and doing chores on the farm. To date, there are 34 grandchildren, 11 step grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 13 step great grandchildren. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
