The film draws on the strength of the characters, and the mystical backstory that has made Mortal Kombat so successful, as it follows LIU KANG (Robin Shou), JOHNNY CAGE (Linden Ashby), and SONYA BLADE (Bridgette Wilson) on their journey to defend the future of mankind. Guided by the mighty Thunder God RAIDEN (Christopher Lambert), the three mortals learn to overcome their inner fears and discover that there is much more at stake than their personal quests -- and that ultimately Mortal Kombat is a tournament not about death, but about life.
Led by the evil Sorcerer SHANG TSUNG (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa), strange and powerful enemies will fight equally hard to defeat their mortal adversaries in their mission to win the tenth Mortal Kombat -- including the fearsome four armed Shokan Prince GORO, who has won Mortal Kombat for the last nine generations. If he triumphs again this time, the portals of Earth will be open and the darkness and despair that have blighted Outworld will reign over the Earth for eternity.
But the three mortals have a secret weapon, the unexpected support of the beautiful Princess KITANA (Talisa Soto). Unbeknownst to SHANG TSUNG and the Emperor, KITANA has decided that it is time for her to assume her right to the throne of Outworld.
