Losing Fat...
So, you too are bugged down by your middle!!! I know its very agonizing to try to fit in those ready-made
jeans and more so being in them all day long. Some years back I too faced the problem and I'd like
to share my story (which shows that I'm a complete dope) with the world. Owing to bad
eating habits (lots and lots of biscuits) and worst exercise routine (some odd pushups and squats once or
twice a month) I had gained 2-3 inches extra at waist. So, I was supposed to do aerobics at least 3 times
a week to get rid of it. I had just got into this gym business that time and as it happens huge arms and
a chiseled chest were my top priorities and as doing aerobics also affects muscles (very little), I
thought up a fancy routine that would help me gain muscles and lose fat simultaneously!! I thought logically
(as a student of computer science is expected to do) that carbs/fat are the sole building blocks of cellulite
and proteins make muscles and deduced that if I eat very little carbs/fat, too much prteins, do
lots of aerobics and still more anaerobics (weigth training) I'll have 100+% chances of having a huge body
with negligible fat. Sounds good, isn't it? Well, that was the first ever routine that I ever stickd to
and a few weeks my 1rm went down!!!!! Thats no all, I lost my muscles at my biceps and my belly
started to bulge out more then ever!! My hands were not steady any more and I began to sehow overall signs
og weakness.
So, the moral of the story :
- By doing aerobics you lose muscles too, but by doing them right you can control the ratio of
fat to muscles to some extent. If you don't do anything foolish, your overall muscles loss will
be almost negligible.
- Avoiding carbs/fat to a limit is ok, but if you try to overdo it you will only get weak and
promote your body to conserve/store as much as it gets.
- You just can't avoid fat gain up while bodybuilding (natural).
Well, I tried my natural approach to the problem and guess what.....I got a fat middle and good muscles. But
first I'll get to what I fear evrybody is looking forward to.......ie, how to lose fat :
Know Cellulite
Fat is nothing more than energy stored for later use. When you eat carbs, your body breaks it down
to glucose. Some of it is converted to energy for immediate use, some is stored in liver as glycogen
for later use and the remaining gets stored as fat under skin your middle, thighs etc. So, it is the
extra calories you ate some time ago. Another source of cellulite is ofcourse fat itself. Fat provides
almost double energy than carbs and almost always gets stored as cellulite (never as glucogen). Cellulite
/fat is supposed to be a steady source of energy, ie, it is supposed to provide energy for daily routine
tasks which require small amount of energy for long duration. Examples are walking, light aerobics, swimming
etc.
How to get rid of it... Fat is nothing more than stored energy so the most logical way to get rid
of it is to use it up...what else? So, firstly you must eat only as much (may be a little less) as your
body requires so that it won't add any extra calories as cellulite. Secondly, you must do some sort of
exercise, that will use up the existing fat. Another thing that you must know is that spot reduction
is a myth. Yeah. You can't remove fat at you middle ONLY. When you workout, you lose fat ALLOVER your
body.
Dieting. Well, the most wrong and silly interpretation of dieting is starving yourself. You'll NEVER
get anywhere by starving yourself. First of all always take your daily quota of vitamins, minerals,
essential fatty acids etc. Dieting often leads to dark circles. This is mostly because of starving your
body of vitamins etc. Remember that these are the things that your body can't produce by itself, you MUST
take them REGULARLY. Secondly, avoiding carbs/fats altogether will not be good for your health. Get a
calorie chart and learn how much calories you should be taking daily. Then schedule your diet accordingly.
You may decide to take lesser calories (not too less) than required and this gives good results too. But
remember that if you starve your body of energy, it will only encourage/force it to store as much as it
can whenever it gets some. What I suggest is visiting your doctor and getting a diet routine done by
expert hands. If you don't want to, then ofcourse the easiest way is to learn to recognize your gut feelings
or instincts to know when you are done. If you are of my type, you'll know when you've got your quota of
calories. As a general rule, start your meal by salads, vegs and fruits. This will ensure that you eat enough
of vitamins and minerals. Then get to carbs and stop eating when you get the feeling that you are not
hungry anymore. Avoid saturated fats and take the unsaturated ones as required. This will do.
Exercise. Once you get the idea that doing anything will burn fat, it'll become lot more
easier to get rid of it. Just try to do things manually. Don't be a lazy bum, walk to
market, throw the remote and go to the TV to change channels, don't use a pipe to water the plants rather use
a small bucket, try to do whatever you possibly can while standing (try it on tv and you'll save much of the
wasted time!!). Jogging for losing weight doesn't mean running hard for 2 minutes three times a week
weightlifting won't burn much of fat. As I said before, you burn fat when you do something that
requires small amount of energy and what you can continue without too much fatiguing for half an hour or so.
When you do something that requires bursts of large amount of energy for short durations, muscles come to
picture. So by sprinting or weightlifting you basically use up your muscles rather than fat. So, jog
only as fast as what will get you slightly puffing and sweating and continue it for ATLEAST 20 minutes
(this applies to any other similar exercise). This will ensure that you lose minimal of the hard earned
muscles and maximal of fat. Also, you needn't do lots of crunches to get a flat tummy as crunches basically
use more of your muscles and less of fat. So, no amount of crunches/situps/raises etc will burn
as much fat as aerobics in the right way will do. How much to do (frequency)it part is slightly tricky. Studies show that
doing aerobics thrice a week works almost as good as doing them daily. But I personally think that
doing them daily ensures continuity and gives good results. So, in my cutting-up routines I do aerobics
daily before my regular isolation exercises. For people suffering from blood-pressure, diabetes etc
its good too (I've seen many and heard of countless people who controlled their disease by doing aerobics
regularly), but they MUST consult a doctor for having the most effective routine. I suggest this for
normal people too as it helps you stay on the safe side. My suggestion is, do aerobics for about
30-45 minutes daily. Stretching although no directly associated to fat lose but I suggest doing stretching
too daily. Don't think you are fit enough until you can touch your toes (standing) and keep at it for at
least 1 minute (in yoga this is considered very effective for achieving a flat belly and good back). Before
concluding, I must tell you that no amount of ab training will remove the fat so don't be misguided by
ads for any equipment that gives you crunches like workout. As to pills, throw them to dustbin, most of them
only remove the water stored (opp to creatine) to give the effect that you lost fat. About those fancy belts I recently came to know through Dr. Ankur Agarwal that after some months of use, they produce spontaneous twitch and thats why they'll soon be withdrawn from market. So, take my advice and stick to natural exercises.
So friends, these are the only two things you gonna need for removing those love handles. Stick to what is
natural, have some patience and you'll get that flat tummy in no time. As to what I did next, I'm a "thrust
to hilt" sort of person and made an extreme (for some persons atleast)but very good routine. I started
jogging in the morning for about 4-5 km (not all initially but I always tried to keep up the pace while
walking too) while I used to go to buy milk from a dairy. In the evening, I started a "3 days on 1 day off"
routine
(60-90 minutes). The second day, I still remember it as if it was yesterday, was the most difficult one.
I almost got into thinking that that routine was not right. But at the completion of second week, I began to
see changes. At the end of 9th week my love handles were gone, my tummy was as flat as it can be and
abs started to show up very nice, I gained cool muscles, my dark circles were no where and my overall
appearance was a healthy and energetic guy. I just followed my insticts in my diet and exercise and I think
once you are good enough to recognize the signals your body is constantly sending, you'll work everything
the right way. If you can't.....well just follow your diet and exercise routines strictly. Either way, if you
stick to what you've decided for some weeks, you'll love the results.
