In a Matter of Moments

Disclaimer: I dont own Rurouni Kenshin. It belongs to Nobuhiro Watsuki and all affiliates.

Notes: The idea for this ficlet popped into my head while I was reading Chapter 8 of Someone to Watch Over Me, by Silent Tears of Agony. Its a great story so if you havent already read it then head on over there and check it out. Many thanks for the inspiration, Silent Tears of Agony.

He used to be one to take away life.

Outside in the hall Kenshin heard Kaorus heavy breathing through the shoji door, heard her ragged grunt as she did what she was told and gave Megumi a push. One push was about to change things dramatically. It would move him farther away from the part of life he spent ten years wandering to escape, and it would move him closer to a new era that he welcomed. In a matter of moments he wouldnt be the same person anymore.

He stood by the door and listened to his wife. She let out a long tired sigh. She had been at this for many hours and he was sorry to put her through it. But she was strong. In more ways than he could ever compare she was so much stronger than him. What he couldnt do for himself in ten long years she did for him right at that moment as Megumi instructed her to breathe deeply and push once again.

The deaths of many flashed before his eyes. He had long forgotten their names and the reasons why they had to die, but he had never forgotten how they had died. Every detail remained within him, sealed away in his heart or passing through his thoughts in his sleep, remaining for the sole purpose to remind him of what he is. But one push changed it all.

As Kaoru grunted through her pain, the shadow of red that tinged his vision for so many years finally began to fade. Blood and death were all that he had been known for, but in a matter of moments that would no longer be the case. Part of him was going to die tonight, and this particular death was one that he welcomed. He didnt mind breaking his vow. The only one he ever truly wanted to kill was the Battousai, and thanks to Kaoru that part of him would finally be gone forever.

It was a glorious night and he had so much to be thankful for. He listened closely at the door again but he no longer heard Kaoru. He heard a baby cry and thats when it happened. He wasnt the same person anymore.

He was one who created life.
