Chapter 1

     Yahh!

Kaoru sliced her wooden sword through the air, attempting to perfect her sword swing even better as assistant master of the Kamiya Kasshin Style.

She swung her sword several times rather forcefully and with more energetic effort than usual.  She was trying to deeply exercise and break an extreme sweat.  Exercise and concentration on her sword technique always rid stressful thoughts from her mind.

At this particular moment, sword technique was not of her concernshe was trying to forget the thoughts that had been lurking in her mind for a while now

The harder she swung, the more effort she put into exercising.  This was an attempt to erase her present thoughts, yet no matter how hard she swung her wooden sword, she could not forget one particular thought.

     Kenshin

     Yahhhh!!

Kaoru made her final swing for the moment and held her pose, holding her sword straight out in front of her as though she just won a battle to protect someone.  She held that pose for a moment with her feet straddled slightly, her knees bent and her eyes staring straight ahead.  If she had been sparring with someone, he or she surely would have fallen to the ground.  Her swordsmanship skills had grown quite strongly especially after all those countless battles she fought with Kenshin.

Now with her concentration at its fullest, she succeeded at an intense workout.  She succeeded in making her heart rate go up and in breaking a sweat, but

This is for you, Kaoru, Kenshin said as he tenderly handed her a beautiful seashell from the sand on the beach.

His eyes were filled with a sparkle of passion as Kaoru placed her hand on his to take the shell from him

Kenshin! she almost screamed aloud as she stood up straight on the floor of her training hall.

She set her sword down, for it was useless now.  All that heavy exercising could not rid her thoughts of a certain someone.

Kaoru sighed and wiped some sweat off her forehead.  Its been a whileand Kenshin and I still seem so far apart

You heading back to the Missys, Kenshin?  Sanosuke asked as he and his friend stepped outside the Akabeko.

The two spent dinner together by themselves, for they had not had a man to man talk as friends lately, after their battle with the Water Clan.  That ended a few weeks ago at summers end and now fall was beginning.

They spent good manly time together and talked over a delicious beef pot.  Now that Tokyo, and the rest of Japan for that matter was more peaceful, their lives were relaxingat least thats what they thought.

Now as the two men stood outside the Akabeko, Kenshins eyes met Sanosukes seriously, in response to his question.  Even though the two had fought and won many physical battles with the sword and in Sanosukes case, with fists, they had more battles to overcome that did not require their fighting skills.  The mission the two of them were on honestly seemed even harder than battling Makoto Shishio.

Yes, Im heading back, Kenshin replied with a twinkle in his eyes, Ill see you later, that I will.

Sanosuke smiled as he watched his tiny friend turn and walk away from the Akabeko.  Even now Kenshin remained calm.  His hair blew sideways off his body while walking at an easy pace into the beautiful night ahead of him.  Sano could detect no trace of tension in his best friend.

You can do absolutely anything, Sanosuke said aloud, even though he knew Kenshin couldnt hear.

If anyone deserves to be happy, its you Kenshin, he thought.

Kenshin had been his only true friendthe one man who saw worth and potential in everyone, including an old fighter for hire and member of the Sekihoutai who wore the symbol for bad on his back.

What did I ever do to deserve his gentleness?

Once his swordsman friend was out of sight, Sanosuke lifted his right bandaged hand and stared at it, almost intimately.

Come back next week to have it re-bandaged

A sparkle filled Sanosukes eyes in response to the memory.  For some reason, he looked up at the sky the next moment.  It certainly was a beautiful night tonight.  The stars seemed to shine their brightest and the moon was full.  A perfect night for

     Maybe I should, he said.
