BRUGES, BELGIUM
December 2001
Since I had a rail ticket good for 10 rides, I decided to take a trip to Bruges.  It was worth it!!  I loved the day I spent there.  I'll try to cram as many pictures as I can on this page.

The 2 above pictures were taken in the Markt.  It's sort of like the Grande Place in Brussels.  There was a huge Christmas tree in the middle of the area and an ice skating rink.  There were food booths surrounding it.  Also in this square was the Belfry.  More about it in a minute! The picture on the right is the Government Palace.
Below is the Belfry.  To the right is one of the HUGE bells.  I was under it (obviously!).  The story of my experience in the Belfry is below these pictures.  It was my favorite part!
To the right are some more bells and their hammers.  These bells were all at the very top of the Belfry.  There's a great city view!  If I have space I'll add that picture.
Okay....the story of the Belfry. As I was walking around in the Markt, I walked into the area on the other side of the Belfry.  There I saw signs advertising carillon concerts.  I was there on one of the days, but I couldn't even get into the Belfry to ask about buying tickets.  I headed to the tourist office to get information there.  I was told that I would be able to hear the concert from there.  I wasted time so that I would be in the right place to hear it, but when it started I couldn't hear anything!!  I rushed back to the Markt to see if it would be better.  It wasn't!!  I hurried to the Belfry which was now open to the public.  I bought a ticket and climbed the 365 steps as fast as I could.  (I did stop on the way to look at the exhibit about the bells.)  When I got to the top, I sat under the bells in the whipping wind and just listened.  It was amazing!!  The view was incredible, but it was too windy to just stand and look at it.  Instead I huddled down out of the wind to hear the concert.  I was under the bells!!  I will never forget that experience.  On the way back down I stopped at the door to where the performer was and just watched him play for a minute.  How I would have loved to talk to him.  I would like to have a stab at playing the Carillon someday.
And here's Bruge from the Belfry.
