Athens, Greece
24-28 January 2001
First let me start by saying that I have WAY too many pictures to put on this one page.  I'll try to give the highlights.  Second, it was COLD!!!  We couldn't believe it.  I don't know why that's important, I just thought you needed to know.
Here are some miscellaneous pictures taken from around the city.
We (my parents and I) tried to see as many things as we could in the few days that we had.  We walked around so much that it wore us out!  Usually we took a nap in the late afternoon and then went back out for dinner and more sites.
<-- As we were in the taxi coming from the airport, we saw this arch.  A couple of days later we came across it in our exploration of the city.
The above picture is of the Roman Agora of Athens
If you think that these look like toilets, YOU ARE RIGHT!!!  They are called vespasianae.  I would NOT want to sit on that!  -->
In the above picture you can see part of a monastery and part of a library.
The Temple of the Winds.  There is an inscription on the blocks that tell us that the donors were Julius Caesar and Augustus.  We thought that was kind of cool!  -->
And of course we went to the Acropolis and saw the Parthenon.  It's so incredible to think how long those structures have been there.  We could see the Acropolis from our hotel at night.  It's lit up!  We walked around and looked at all the temples, the theaters and other things there.  We went into the museum, too.  I would like to someday go to a performance at the outdoor theater.  I'm sure the tickets are outrageous, but I would be willing to bet that it's worth it!
One of the last things we did was to go see the Temple of Poseidon.  It was a guided tour.  We left in the early afternoon.  It was about a 45 minute bus ride.  It was cold and seriously windy.  The temple is right on the water (of course).  It wasn't a clear day, but some of the postcards from the shop showed how beautiful the view is from there on a clear day.  Once again....amazing!!
Below are two other pictures taken at the Acropolis.  One is of the small theater, and the other is of some arches.  You can see Athens in the background.
