Last Saturday, I went to the CEHK exhibition in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It is an annual Computer and Electronic fair, lot of electronic, audio, hardware and software companies demonstrates their so-called high technological products.
This was my first time to attend this fair, Jeff and Raymond had been there for ten years, they felt totally disappointed this time. The venue was very small and few of exhibitors.
I still felt interesting because I saw some weird things. Several well known brands hired some models and wore them as sex bombs - silvery mini skirts, low cut little vests, long straight hair and heavy make-up. These girls held the products or simply stood still in front of booths, then lots of guys from young to middle age crazily took photos to them with their digital and professional cameras. You could imagine how funny it was when around 50 men squeezing in 5m x 5m area before a model and tried their best effort to find the most strategic position. For those low-cut girls, some men even climbed up a ladder to take a fantastic shot at his 'perfect' angle. I also tried my best to squeeze into the crowd of these hungry dirty men and took some photos, then I took some photos to those groups of 'photographers'. It was so ridiculous but funny.
Then when I walked through the aisle, I could barely see any 'photographers' passing by. I wondered if their aim of coming over this place was for those girls only. I understood the main visitors of CEHK was male, but even they could attract them by those silvery leather (plastic) uniform sex bombs, if they do not walk over and being aroused their interest in products, I do not believe it is a successful exhibition.
I am not going to criticize this phenomenon with gender inequality theories, but from economic point of view, wasn't it unprofessional? It could surely arouse noise, but I suspect it will deteriorate the company image, not to mention the company actually ignores the female market, which is a potential and money-making sector.
