Teaching Activities

I am currently involved with teaching (teaching in the classroom, developing lecture/tutorial/assignments materials, assessing assignments and examination scripts) of the following subject at the Centre for Oil and Gas Engineering, the University of Western Australia:

Oil and Gas Engineering 402 (Petroleum Production Engineering): Reservoir volume balance and its applications to assess and predict production performance of various reservoir types, Analysis and design of hydraulic fracturing and performance prediction of fractured reservoirs, Gravel packing for sand control, Reservoir simulation.

I was involved with teaching of the following subjects at the School of Petroleum Engineering, the University of New South Wales:

Drilling System Design and Optimisation: Prediction of formation pore pressure and fracture gradients and their use in selecting safe mud weight and casing setting depths; Casing loads, materials, specifications, strengths and their use in combination grading cost-effective design of casing program; Design and planning of deviated well trajectory according to different methods and required bottom hole assembly; Various methods and tools to monitor deviated well drilling.

Well Drilling Equipment and Operations: Physical processes involved in drilling oil and gas wells; Rotary drilling rigs for land and offshore operations; Drilling equipment including rig powering and transmission, hoisting, rotary systems, BOP equipment and hookup, drill pipes and collars. Drilling fluid circulating systems including pumps, mud tanks, mud mixtures and mud cleaners; Elements of rock mechanics and its application in drilling; Selection of drill bits and penetration rate optimization; Rig sizing and selection; Special marine equipment.

During my teaching at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, I taught the following subjects:

Undergraduate;

  • Strength of Materials
  • Ship Structures
  • Welding Engineering
Postgraduate;
  • Finite Element Structural Analysis
  • Design of Ship Structures
  • Structural Optimization
Thesis Supervised;

I have successfully provided direction and supervision to the following postgraduate/honours research projects:

  • The initiation and Propagation of, and Interaction between, Hydraulic Fractures from Horizontal Wellbores (Awarded PhD in 1999 to D.G. Crosby, UNSW)
  • Reservoir Stimulation by Hydraulic Fracturing: Complexities and Remedies with Reference to Initiation and Propagation of Induced and Natural Fractures (Awarded PhD in 2000 to M.M. Hossain, UNSW)
  • Theoretical and Experimental Investigations of Mud Pressure Penetration into Shales for Wellbore Stability Studies (Under review for M.Sc. to D. Naseby, UNSW)
  • Hydraulic Fracture Design Optimisation for Enhanced Gas Recovery from Tight Reservoirs (Final stage for PhD to M.M. Rahman, UNSW)
  • Elastic Deformation and Fracture Charging during High Pressure High Temperature Drilling: Consequence of Borehole Ballooning on Stability (Final stage for M.Sc., leading to PhD, O. Helstrup, UNSW)
  • Natural Fractures Simulation by an Intelligent Technique for Improved Hydraulic Stimulation in HDR Reservoirs (Middle stage for M.Sc. leading to PhD. to Nam Tran, UNSW)
