| 24 April 2004: 13 Going on 30 (PG-13 - 97 mins) | Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo | 3.5 stars | A- -Another rendition of the "Big" story: A 13-year-old girl in an awkward teen phase detests herself as not being accepted by the popular crowd or "six chicks" and makes a wish to be 30, which is subsequently granted. Jennifer Garner must portray a teen in the body of an adult, and the 'Alias'-super-spy pulls it off surprisingly well. The movie cuased many laughs among the audience and even some tears. Though parts toward the middle of the movie seemed to drag out a bit as the love story developed, the film was an ultimate success. 23 April 2004: Dogville (R - 177 mins) | Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany | 4 stars | A+ -A unique, blunt, and yet hyperbolic testimony of America at it's lowest. Though often times this movie forces the average American to be introspective and observant of oneself and his or her community, it seems to me more of an misanthropic movie rather than simply of the depravity of Americans. This is Kidman's best performance since The Hours, the Acadamy Award winner of 2002; she perfectly portrays the weak and abused Grace, whom is on the run from the Mob, and becomes servant to the people of Dogville. As rewards are posted for her return, the citizens of the unbearably confining town demand more of the fugitive. |
