an Apocalyptic Road Trip- traveling in limbo between millennia
Our known century ends a couple of days from the writing of this to usher in a
new era, the 21st century and beyond.  It's my opinion that, by our own rules, the
new millennium is not yet upon us. Oh yeah, the old one is dead and gone, but we
have one full year between the two to ponder which is which. 2001 welcomes in a
third thousand years A.D., which would mean we are caught in limbo for a little while.

Time can be such a personal and socially relevant symbol and I, like most of us,
have an urge to remark on it in a personal and socially relevant way. Well, my
commentary is through travel. If life is a journey, then this journal is a life in the
making- complete with joy, angst, reflection, and hope for the future. It seems
we are getting further away from ourselves, or settling on a superficial connection
with reality and each other. What better time to explore than in a time of social
uncertainty? Along the way we may even find answers to such seemingly simple
questions as: Are strangers bad? Can hitchhiking kill you? Is the world as we know
it going to end any time soon and, if not, where will we go from here?
Over the next few months, join me in my travels through the American South. Why
south? It's winter and I'll be hoofing it on the streets and sleeping in the great out-
doors occassionally. With a backpack, some warm clothes and an insatiable curiosity
we'll see where the road leads. Into the hearts and homes of my fellow man would be
nice, but will settle for good conversation and cheap lodging- enough soul fuel to keep
me going and writing.
