Christine Daae! Where would the Phantom of the Opera be without Christine, Literally! The Christine I refer to is the talented Sarah Brightman. You see, the
Phantom of the Opera musical we all know and love today would not be the same if not for Sarah Brightman. Sarah was intimite with Andrew Lloyd Webber by the time she was in "Cats" and was
later given a leading role in "Requiem." Because of her influences with ALW Sarah got the role of a lifetime in 1986 in Webber's new production "The Phantom of the Opera" Webber wrote the
music of Christine with Sarah in mind. The music Sarah was to sing, such as in the song "The Phantom of the Opera" was designed to show off Sarah's full vocal range. Such dynamic pitch changes
might not have been incorperated into this musical, had Webber not intended Sarah for the part. Sarah Brightman has since become the marquis Christine Dae, and is known by phantom fans
everywhere. Though few fans ever actually saw Sarah on stage, they have all heard her voice in the original London recording. Sarah Brightman has moved on since phantom, recording several new
albums and being recently in a tour of both Germany and England. Though featured in many ALW musicals, Sarah Brightman's popularity, class and talent never reached or surpassed that of Elaine Paige.
Also, unfortunately, Sarah and ALW are no longer together.
There have been several Christines since Brightman, especially seeing as though Phantom plays in six or seven cities at once. New Christines are usually found in understudies, but those who play Meg Giry rarely become Christine, because the vocal range for Christine is much larger than for Meg. Many Christines start out as doing only mattines, and then move on to become the feature Christine. Few Christines are promotions from smaller female roles, unlike the way many Andre's and Raoul's eventually become Phantom's. I mean, how many Carlotta's do you know that ever became Chritines's... or vice versa! If you have any news about this topic, please e-mail me and I will post your news in the news room.
