Madame and Meg Giry

Once the music begins follow along in the text below (this only works if you already know the song) The text is abridged to fit the length of the midi, so use the times in brackets to keep track. After the song text there is a discusion of the Giries

[1 sec]MEG
Where in the world
have you been hiding?
Really, you were
perfect!

I only wish
I knew your secret!
Who is this new
tutor? {tacit}

[36 sec]CHRISTINE (abstracted, entering the dressing room)
Father once spoke
of an angel . . .
I used to dream he'd
appear . . .

Now as I sing,
I can sense him . . .
And I know
he's here . . .
(trance-like)

Here in this room
he calls me softly . . .
somewhere inside . . .
hiding . . .

Somehow I know
he's always with me . . .
he - the unseen
genius . . .

[1:25 sec] MEG (uneasily)
Christine, you must have
been dreaming . . .
stories like this can't
come true . . .

Christine, you're talking
in riddles . . .
and it's not
like you . . .

[1:49]CHRISTINE (not hearing her, ecstatic)
Angel of Music!
Guide
and guardian!
Grant to me your
glory!

MEG (to herself)
Who is this angel?
This . . .

BOTH
Angel of Music!
Hide no longer!
Secret and strange
angel . . .

CHRISTINE (darkly)
He's with me, even now . . .

MEG (bewildered)
Your hands are cold . . .

CHRISTINE;
All around me . . .

MEG
Your face, Christine,
it's white . . .

CHRISTINE
It frightens me . . .

MEG
Don't be frightened . . .

[2:24 sec]
THE MIRROR (ANGEL OF MUSIC)

(Abridged is a scene "Little Lotte" with Christine and Raoul)

(Tremulous music. CHRISTINE hears the
PHANTOM'S voice, seemingly from behind her dressing
room mirror)

[2:27 sec]PHANTOM'S VOICE
Insolent boy!
This slave
of fashion
basking in your
glory!

Ignorant fool!
This brave
young suitor,
sharing in my
triumph!

CHRISTINE (spell-bound)
Angel! I hear you!
Speak -
I listen . . .
stay by my side,
guide me!

Angel, my soul was weak -
forgive me . . .
enter at last,
Master!

[3:16 sec]PHANTOM'S VOICE
Flattering child,
you shall know me,
see why in shadow
I hide!

Look at your face
in the mirror -
I am there
inside!

(The figure of the PHANTOM becomes discernible
behind the mirror)

[3:41 sec]CHRISTINE (ecstatic)
Angel of Music!
Guide and guardian!
Grant to me your
glory!

Angel of Music!
Hide no longer!
Come to me, strange
angel...

PHANTOM"S VOICE
I am your Angel ...
Come to me: Angel of Music ...

(CHRISTINE walks towards the glowing,
shimmering glass. Meanwhile, RAOUL has
returned. He hears the voices and is puzzled. He
tries the door It is locked)

[4:16 sec]RAOUL
Whose is that voice . . .?
Who is that in there . . .?

(Inside the room the mirror opens. Behind it, in
an inferno of white light, stands the PHANTOM.
He reaches forward and takes CHRISTINE firmly,
but not fiercely, by the wrist. His touch is cold,
and CHRISTINE gasps)

PHANTOM
I am your Angel of Music . . .
Come to me: Angel of Music . . .

(CHRISTINE disappears through the mirror,
which closes behind her The door of the dressing
room suddenly unlocks and swings open, and
RAOUL enters to find the room empty)

(not in midi)
RAOUL
Christine! Angel!

Ahhhhhh the Giries.... the sort of "filler" characters of "The Phantom of the Opera" so unnecisarry to the plot yet very necissary all the same. Simple characters yet complex, flat yet diverse. I any case they both bring something to the show that woudn't be there otherwise.... and both Giry's contrast like chiascuro (a painting tecnihque inveted by Leonardo DiVinci in which darkness emphasizes lightness.) Think about it. Mme. Giry is stern, wears all black and is the only conection to the phantom other than christine.. the only other one who "knows where they are." The question is can we trust her..... oh but we must so long as we remember the hand at the level of our eyes...! Oh I crack myself up. Why the punjab lasso M. :) Anyway then we have Meg...... little inoccent ballerina all in white who fears even mention of the phantom and screams so many times I wonder if she die from the sites walking down Bleaker St. in NYC! Both parts require certain talents. Mme. requires a good acting ability especially for be stren and also exaserbated. Meg must be an excellent ballet dancer or forget even trying out. Her voice dosen't have to be soprano like christine but proabbly mezzo. She also has to be able to scram veryu loudly. (Anyone who's seen the show know's what I mean.) In the original London Production Madame Giry was played by Mary Millar and Meg was played by Janet Devinish. I have to date seen only one Meg Giry related site and I forget its address.
