She began talking about how tight money is for her. I told her I can relate, that it was so tight for me earlier this year that my electricity had been turned off for two-and-a-half months this summer and that this week I overdrew my checking account. We swapped stories for a moment about how broke each of us is and how small our apartments are... it was almost humorous.

I'd listened for an hour about her year, so it was only fair to start telling her of mine. I said, "It's been a hell of a year for me, too. I lost my teaching job in January." The words in response made my heart sink.

"I know."

As uncoldly as I could I asked, "Oh? How did you hear about it?"

"I had an instrumental hand in that."

I knew it! Goddamn it! I feel so defeated and all I want to do is cry.
