Two hours Tuesday pretty much summed up life for me in La Crosse County.

About 4pm I was at the library for my daily stop on my way to work, checking my email and working on my football picks for the week. I was just finishing up when I felt a pair of hands on my shoulders.

Looking up and behind me, grinning, were Brian and Jon, two Holmen students who were looking to speak with me. They cruised down to where they thought I lived, realized they didn't have my phone number, and stopped at the library to look it up. When they saw me sitting at one of the computers, their mission came to a happier-than-expected conclusion.

They're both seniors this year, and we spent 45 minutes talking and making pleasantries. God, it was great seeing them! They gave me a lift to work and we all promised to keep in touch.

At work, it was business as usual. I logged in at 5:00 and started working on audits. The supervisors were in a meeting and one of the newer employees had a call in which the guest asked to talk to a supervisor. Since there was no supervisor available, he got me... business as usual... I had taken perhaps a half-dozen "supe calls" over the past two months. I diffused the situation and was back at my audits.

I was then asked to speak with the OM. She let me know that sharing the letter I'd written with coworkers was unprofessional, that my conduct was creating a hostile work environment, and that since I'd given Darci a month's notice, they were upping my resignation immediately. My personal belongings were delivered to the reception area. I was fired.

I was already planning on moving back to northeast Wisconsin, but I honestly thought I still had some time to find work there first before moving. Now all plans are being accelerated.

I lose my security deposit on my apartment if I give less than a month's notice, yet at the same time, why look for another job here if I'm planning to move away in a month? Needless to say, my bridges are burning. There's nothing keeping me in La Crosse County at all. I will miss my students and have made a few friends among my Harrah's cohorts, but I won't miss anything else here. Not a thing.
