There was a CD Cathy had given me. There were pictures of Jackie, primed for more rumors of Setback Number Two. And there was my most recent bank statement. What Kari had said was true... I didn't know what a bitch she could be... but I was getting an idea. I took my belongings and hid them in a safe place, then continued the process of packing the rest of my things.

I heard Tim's car driving up and dropping Kari off at the house about 3am after going to Oktoberfest in La Crosse together. I stayed in the downstairs bedroom and listened as her footsteps as she roamed from room to room, upstairs and down until it was quiet enough to fall asleep, about 5am.

I left before she awoke. I called my current landlord and signed a lease for my studio apartment... just big enough to fit all my belongings. When I came home I asked how she was doing, but she turned without words and went upstairs. She came down to take a shower, got dressed and put on make-up when Tim arrived. Not wanting to see her with the new man in her life I left.

I drove to La Crosse, thinking of the threat from Sunday to get someone to physically make me leave, of the threats Thursday of destroying my career and my relationship with Catherine. Now I knew the means by which she'd try to accomplish these ends. It was time to start playing some serious defense. I contacted the County Sheriff's Department to register my fears. The deputy taking notes sympathized with my situation, but since no threat to my actual person was made there was little he could do at that point. If anything more serious to happen, though, he gave me his card and told me to call him.
