I had slept in Catherine's room the night before and did the same Wednesday as well. I was in her room for a couple hours when, close to midnight, Kari said she was going out. She said her soon-to-be-ex had called to talk because his sister had been in a car accident. Rather than go to the hospital to meet, though, they were going to talk at a dance club in Sparta. It wasn't right, and I'd heard the "car accident" story from someone else before. After she left, I hit the redial button on the phone and the number appearing on the display was her ex's... he didn't call her... she'd called him!

Thursday night was more silence at home. I didn't try talking with Kari at all, no need to make her even more upset. Friday morning when I was getting ready for school, just for giggles I hit the redial button again... the last call Thursday night as well was to the ex.

Friday night when I came home from school Kari had left a note on the table saying she was out getting supper and some movies. Finally... a chance for some time together and perhaps to reconcile whatever was bothering her. When she came home, though, she set the table for one... the first time that had been done in all my time there. I got the message and decided to go out to Holmen's football game... at least be with people who truly were happy to see me. There I ran into some students in the parking lot tailgating with a barbecue grill and a cooler full of pop. I was hugged by a half dozen students and invited to join them; I talked with them for half an hour then went in to enjoy the game.

I returned home about 10pm and Kari was watching one of her movies. This time she wasn't trying to hide... after it was done she went upstairs to call the ex and talked with him for 20 minutes. Over three nights she'd spent more time talking with him than she did with me all week.

I couldn't take it any more and left to visit my family for the weekend.
