Hiking to Mount Assinaboine

July 1999. My brother brought his girlfriend, Mary, home to Ta Ta Creek and was hoping to take her on several hikes in the area to places he has always enjoyed. I had agreed to join them on a hike in the Rocky Mountain Valley, and to my pleasant surprise they chose Assinaboine.

When I was 9 years old our family hiked into Assinaboine, and I do recall I whined and complained the whole time. I did have the shortest legs in the family and was not impressed with walking all day long, carrying a pack on my back. Thankfully, I wasn't a whiner this time and I enjoyed the whole trip.

My parents, Scott and June, and a friend of the family's, Don Davies also accompanied us on this trip. We hiked to Bragg Creek the first day, then hiked on to the campsite at the base of Mount Assinaboine the second day. On the third day we spent half a day hiking around (we visited Don's Mecca) and then the weather changed from beautiful and sunny to cold, wet, and windy. We took a vote and four of us wanted to start hiking back to Bragg creek immediately, Don didn't care either way, and Bill really wanted to stay even though it was so cold and rainy that we would probably be confined to our tents for the duration of the day. Being democratic, we headed back to Bragg creek and then home on the fourth day.

Shark's Tooth peak. We passed this peak on our first day of hiking in to Bragg Creek.

This bird tried to steal our lunch food, so we started to feed it bits of bread. It wasn't at all shy about landing on a hand to take some food.
