Total Solids

Total solids can be referred to total residue which includes:

1.            Dissolved solids or portion of the solid matter found in a water sample that passes through a filter.

2.          Suspended solids, or that portion of the solid matter found in a water sample that passes through a filter.

A constant level of these is necessary for maintaining the aquatic life.

Abiotic influences: chemicals from cars and industrial areas in streams are a contribution to the total solids in a stream.

Biotic influences: wastes form humans or animals affect the amount of total solids. Anything that is living that produces a waste is a biotic influence.
