Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)

During organic decomposition, organic matter is broken down by bacteria. BOD is calculated by taking the level of DO and testing the sample 5 days later. The amount of oxygen that the bacteria use is the BOD of the water. There is nothing wrong with high levels of oxygen demand but it does take away for the organisms in the water.

Biotic Influences: leaves and fertilizers contribute to the bacteria that break down the organic matter in the streams.

Abiotic Influences: The sun is a form of an Abiotic influence. The sun provides the energy that will help the bacteria break down the organic matter on the bottom of the stream.
