WHAT WE ARE LEARNING:
Learning letters and sounds is so important when learning to read.  When you know the letter sounds, you can start making words!

We are also working on reading the most common words in our language. These are sometimes the shortest words, too. They are  also called "sight words" because you should be able to read them right away. Some of these are a, in, it, at, on, the, is, and I.

Hi, I'm Miss Helmer, a new teacher at Plainfield School. I gradauted from CMU with degrees in Special Education and Child Development. I'm excited to start teaching.

One of my favorite animals is the giraffe. This is a new baby giraffe at the Toledo Zoo.
Parents sometimes ask about homework for this young age. Even though we do not have regular "homework" at this time, there are things that your child should be doing that will help  foster that work ethic that leads to a successful time at school.

1. Chores! Even young children can be expected to keep their room clean, set the table, or help clean around the house.

2. Play! Play is the work of young children. Not only does it help all areas of development, but active play will keep your child healthy and happy.

3. Reading! At this age, reading may be just looking at pictures, finding a few known words  or making up their own story. These are excellent activities, as is listening to a story.

Play outside for more time than you watch TV, go on the computer, or play video games.

Alphabet Shopping!
Go to a grocery store and see if you can find things that start with each letter of the alphabet. You don't have to buy everything, this is just for pretend. Can you get through the whole alphabet?
