| 16-week Special Education student teaching January 2007-May 2007 Host Teacher: Deb Kuczynski School District: Central Montcalm Community Schools |
| Description of Setting: This Placement is an elementary resource room in an upper elementary building. Students coming to this room have special needs related to a learning disability, emotional impairment, or other health impairment caused by ADHD or ODD. Throughout the day 16 special education students in 4th, 5th, or 6th grades come for instruction in reading, written expression, spelling, and math. A wide variety of teaching methods are used. Instruction is usally given in small groups although some whole group instruction occurs. Students are exposed to lecture, discussion, demonstration, and many hands on activities. Students also have 30-60 minutes at least 3 times a week to independently practice skills taught during class instruction. Once a week the school social worker comes to the room to work on problem solving skills. They also go to the motor skills room and work with the occupational therapist once a week. |

| Students use the computers to complete projects and daily independent work. Computers can motivate students to write because for many, it's simply easier to type than write legibly. |
| A relaxed environment promoted comfort for students and choices as to where they could sit. This helped make the resource room into a safe haven for students who usually had difficulty in the general classroom. |
