Grade Level: 1st
Subject: Literacy
Concept: Color name recognition and handwriting
Type of Lesson: activity-game
Size of Group: 5-9
This activity is part of “centers,” where the class is divided in three groups, and each group rotates between three centers.
Materials: deck of Color Cards, color names recording sheet (see attached)
Time: 30 min
Objective: The student will be able to recognize and recall the names of colors.
The student will practice and improve their handwriting through recording names of colors as the collect them.
The deck of cards will be layed out on a table. Each student takes a turn flipping over two cards. The student can keep the cards if they match. For example, if they turn over a card that says blue and a card with a scribble of a blue crayon, they can keep that match. When they find a match, they record this on their sheet by tracing the color’s name and the color itself.
If a student turns over two cards and they do not match, then the cards a flipped back over and it’s the next student’s turn. All students will take turns flipping cards until all the cards are collected by the students.
This game will be played as many times as we can before the next group rotates.
