| If you were in the 1980s and you were into the music of that era, you would undoubtably know the hard rock band Guns N' Roses. The band, which originated in the US in 1985 had a hard time getting started. Being Americans was the eaisy part, being in the music industry was the hard part. When starting out, they had minor hits. The band members consisted chiefly of Axl Rose (lead singer), Slash (lead guitarist and rhythm guitarist), Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitarist), Duff McKagan (bass), and Steven Adler( drums). At a time when pop was dominated by dance music and pop metal, Guns N' Roses brought raw, ugly rock & roll crashing back into the charts. They were not nice boys; nice boys don't play rock & roll. They were ugly, misogynist, violent; they were also funny, vulnerable, and occasionally sensitive, as their breakthrough hit "Sweet Child O' Mine" showed. While Slash and Izzy Stradlin ferociously spit out dueling guitar riffs worthy of Aerosmith or the Stones, Axl Rose screeched out his tales of sex, drugs, and apathy in the big city; bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler were a limber rhythm section that kept the music loose and powerful. Guns N' Roses' music was basic and gritty, with a solid hard, bluesy base; they were dark, sleazy, dirty, and honest -- everything that good hard rock and heavy metal should be. In 1986, Guns N' Roses had their big break with the hit single 'Sweet Child 'O Mine'. After a few more hits, they came out with their greatest album simply titled Appetite for Destruction. The album, which was recieved with acclaim had such hits as 'Sweet Child O Mine', 'Paradise City', 'Mr. Brownstone', 'My Michelle' and made 'Welcome to the Jungle' their signature song. To add up to the vivaciousness and brilliance of their rollicking rock, they came out with Use Your Illusions I and II in early and late 1991. Since then, they became regular hits and regular sold-out concerts. They were at the peak of their success. It was around this time that they got Dizzy Reed to join the band as their keyboardist. In 1993, they came out with The Spaghetti Incident?. The album is considered by some to be stupid, tedious and boring. To others, it is benign, and a more subtle, more soft approach to their hard rock days in the late 80s. Anyway, it didn't do too well. Maybe it was due to the poor selling of The Spaghetti Incident? or more personal reasons, but the band split up. Axl and Dizzy continued to keep the original soul of Guns N' Roses alive, but Slash left a founded the metal band Snakepit and Izzy and Duff both founded their own bands. In late 2001, Guns N' Roses had a European tour, much a comeback tour than anything else. It was a success. Then came the big issue, a North American Tour. It was not a success. The first 5 or 6 concerts went relatively well, but their was two riots (one in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and one in Vancouver, Britsh Columbia) and they had to cancel the rest of the tour. The riots occured because Axl didn't show up to the concert. Fans were horrified. Recently, Axl has bought the brand name of Guns N' Roses, and owns all sales of the name. In the hearts of those in love with the music, are still loyal, but we wish they were still going strong. Guns N' Roses will always be the hard rock kings of the 80s. |
