STONE TEMPLE PILOTS

July 14th, 2000 @ Queen Elizabeth Theatre Vancouver, BC, Canada

STP was a good show. The opener, Palo Alto, wasn't very enjoyable. They were ripping of Pablo Honey era Radiohead. STP kicked off the show with the most ass kicking number they could begin the show with, 'Crackerman', driving the crowd nuts. Scott had some interesting clothes. More on that later. Then we heard 'Vasoline' and 'Tumble In The Rough'. The set was heavy with songs mostly from Core for some reason. Half of the show was stuff from Core, which is good or bad depending on how you see it. All the hits from the first two albums were played. 'Creep' and 'Sour Girl' were done in an acoustic flavour. When it got really quiet during 'Creep', this dude standing near me yelled out part of the song, mistiming what part of the song it was.

Anyways, from Core we heard 'Dead And Bloated', 'Sex Type Thing', 'Wicked Garden', 'No Memory' preluding into 'Sin', 'Creep', 'Piece Of Pie', 'Plush', and 'Crackerman'. They basically only played the four singles from Purple while teasing us with the intro to 'Army Ants', which would've been cool to hear since that's one of the best songs from Purple. Before 'Big Empty', Scott introduced Dean DeLeo, who opened the song with cool guitar licks and a cigarette dangling from his mouth in a cool fashion. The only played two songs from Tiny Music which were the aforementioned 'Tumble In The Rough' and 'Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart'. That was a bit disappointing as it would've been nice to hear 'Big Bang Baby' (the first STP song I got into), 'Lady Picture Show', or even some of the lesser known ones, 'Adhesive', 'Art School Girlfriend', and 'Ride the Cliche'. Played from No. 4 was 'Down', 'Sour Girl' and 'Sex and Violence'.

During the encore, Scott came out in a platinum wig, shades and a black leather skirt and girdle. It kind of reminded of me of how Kurt Cobain used to dress in drag, like in the Sao Paolo '93 Nirvana show and Aneurysm video. It was a wicked show. The Core heavy selection was a crowd pleaser but a few more of the songs from the other albums would've been nice. STP was really solid though and I don't really have much to complain about.
