I respect slipknot, not only for their refreshing sound in metal. But the very large fan base that contains listeners of punk, alternative, metal, and etc...

Slipknot to me is not rap-metal, its more of a nu-metal band with a great sound. so listen to one of their albums again and think about what i said

by the way FUCK YOU

SLIPKNOT (2000)

(reviewed by Pat D.)

Welp, herein lies my umpteenth attempt at liking this new metal shit. One of my major problems with Limp and Korn (as well as half of the other derivatives of the two), is that nobody does anything fast and/or ferocious anymore. Nobody. Sepultura have been fairly slow since Arise, which was way back in good ol '91, Slayer have been fast occasionally, i guess, but they sound pretty tired on Diabolus, Pantera never really were all that fast to begin with, and nobody outside of the underground metal community have heard of Iced Earth. So, there is no chance in hell that any of their songs will make it onto 92.3 KSellout here in NY. Enter Slipknot.

Now, there is no way in hell I am gonna call these guys metal. They just aren't. What Slipknot is however, is 9 guys who got bored with life in the Midwest and put on a bunch of laughable costumes and jump around like jackasses on stage. Everytime I see the video for "Wait And Bleed" I cant help but start rolling on the ground laughing at the juvenileness of it all. So why on earth did I bother with the album? Because, despite the ridiculous nature of their stage personas, the result of their studio labor is not bad at all.

The best description for the sound the Slipsters have come up with is "speed Korn", to coin a much overused and cliched phrase. But even beyond that, they actually have some instrumental talent in their ranks. Drummer Joey Jordison is without a doubt the fastest and most talented drummer on 92.3 KSuck and all those other nu metal stations out there. It's really not even close. Silveria sounds tame. Otto has a massively heavy sound, but it sounds like he's doing about 3bpm after listening to Joey speed stroke his way through "Eyeless"---which by the way is a phenomenal near- thrasher. I also hear some Sepultura influence in them---namely, the tribal samples that are thrown in here and there throughout the album. But most often, like I mentioned somewhere before, they remind me of a modern reincarnation of Slayer.

Now dont get me wrong, there's no way I would start comparing Lombardo or Bostaph to Jordison - Joey's going to lose out any day of the week. But man, do these guys play fast. Maybe not as fast as Reign In Blood era Slayer, but it is a welcome change from the sludge metal all over the dial now. Oh yeah, you probably want to know something about the album in particular. As I mentioned, "Eyeless" is great. Its a fantastic burst of rage, although in reality, I still cannot figure out what lead singer Mr. Taylor is so pissed about. You name it, "Eyeless" has got it - well, except for a guitar solo, which is probably too much to wish for at this point in popular hard rock. Blazing speed and drumming from Jordison, an acceptable, if simplistic guitar riff, and sudden, kickass tempo changes.

Other notables are the radio single "Wait And Bleed", the pseudo single "Spit It Out", the thrashing "Surfacing". On the second side, "Liberate" and "No Life" are the highlights. Other than those couple of tracks though, I must admit side two is kind of weak. Finally, let me just say that if you hate new metal with a vengence, and for no specific reason, you probably wont like Slipknot either. They just play a slightly more creative, super sped up version of it. I like to think I have a teensy bit of an open mind however, and I will admit I enjoyed this album far more than any other of whatever this genre is called. Although, in reality, that isnt saying much.

I can' t believe that you wasted your hard earned money on this "New Wave" shit. Please don' t start turning your back on us Metalheads.

IOWA (2001)

(reviewed by Pat D.)

The freaks with the laughable costumes are back. Now, I know ive taken a lot of heat about my endorsement of this band's self-titled release. And yes, I agree that the bands image is laughable. But dammit, Joey and the boys delivered 15 tracks of the most refreshing thing (by far) to come out of the rapmetal era. To this day, I still think Slipknot is the best rapmetal album were are ever likely to get. Creative drumming and solid riffing abounds throughout that disc, something severely lacking on any other album in the genre. So, it was with high hopes that i began critiquing this new release, entitled Iowa, which, for those of you who dont know, is where these losers came from.

Unfortunately, this record fails in the critical areas that the last one succeeded. See, on that disc, the band despite its ridiculously over the top stage and video personas, let their gimmicky existence take the backseat to some good solid, almost speed metallish songwriting. Matter of fact, if you listened to the CD and never ever saw a picture of the band or a video, you probably wouldnt guess the extremely moronic and childish stage act they put on. Not so here. Also, the lyrics on the other album were either (a) unintelligible most of the time (b) not too bad. Just take a gander at the chorus to "Heretic Song" off of this album: "If your 555, then I'm 666"

LOL. Oh man. Trying to mix Beast era Maiden lyrics with numetal sensibilities? No no no, Mr. Corey Taylor. How about the title of the second track: "People=Shit". Actually, that brings me to another couple of problems with this band that are brought to the forefront on parts of this disc. One, their lyrics and subject matter are about as threatening and angry as something you'd expect from a high schooler. Two, vocalist Corey Taylor while being able to scream his lungs out, has absolutely no power or presence behind that scream, like say, a Max Cavalera or Phil Anselmo. I think the most formidable he sounds like is a white middle class teen homey wannabe. But again, the riffage and drum interplay on the first album was good enough to ignore these obvious shortcomings for the most part. Now, however, it seems the band is caught up in their image like most bands that make it big nowadays, and the music definitely takes a downturn because of it.

The few good tracks are "Heretic Song", which has a cool rhythmic base once you get past the lame lyrics. Ditto for "People=Shit" with nice double bass hits by Jordison and chunky guitar by Mick. "Left Behind" is an unofficial sequel to "Wait And Bleed" as it seems destined to be the lone single that can get played on mainstream radio. "Everything Ends" and "I Am Hated" are decent. But theres no "Eyeless" on this album and the title track is 15 minutes of the most boring, go nowhere noise in the last 10 years or so. And dont get me started on "New Abortion" or "Disasterpiece" which the titles alone should clue you in to the childish lyrics you are about to be exposed to. Overall, i'd have to say this is a big case of the "Sophomore Slump", but the difference here is that Slipknot isnt likely to recover from it, because they and their fans actually consider this good music.
