I have listened to the Headhunters for 10 years at least. I really like these guys. The mix of rock/country/blues really gives them an edge, especially with the country music we have today. Lets face it kenny Chesney, is no Johnny Cash, or Wille Nelson, and Martina Mcbride is no Patsy Cline. Im getting off track sorry.

I listen to a lot of country, and southern rock. In my oppinion the Headhunters are up there with Lynard Skynard, and the James Gang.

Walk Softly on This Heart of Mine is a great song, a song that every guy should be playing for that particular girl that has, or is going to break up with him. Good combination of standard country beat, with a rockabilly twist.

PICKIN' ON NASHVILLE (1989)

(reviewed by Kevin Baker)

No, this isn't country. Country-rock, yeah. But it isn't straight out country. For pete's sake, they're from the Bluegrass State, so you know there'll be some countrified parts. But it ain't bad at all. It has a pretty cool mix of bluegrass, rock, and country. Where does each come in? Well, the lead vocals are kinda countrified with pretty country-ish lyrics, but when the backing vocals come in, it goes very bluegrass-ish. But the instrumentation is very rockabilly and Southern rock-ish. It all blends together fairly well, too.

I'd also like to add this is one of my parent's CDs, not mine. It's not bad, either. Certainly better than the Dixie Chicks. However, I will admit to owning their first CD...dang it, I thought they were cute! Plus, some of their songs were kinda catchy. However, this is not a Dixie Chick sharetime. No, tis a Kentucky Headhunters review, and reviewing is serious business. Oh, who am I fooling? I take this about as seriously as Bill Clinton took the 10 Commandments seriously...that is to say, not very seriously at all. I bet I'll be catching it from Samuel Fassbinder for that....

At any rate, You may actually know the second song on here, Dumas Walker. From what I've heard, it was a hit for the band. I like it myself. The guitar is VERY rockabilly on this one, and it's really catchy. A fun little song with some hooks. Nobody could accuse this band or album of being deep or serious, but that's fine by me. There's something to be said for just havin' fun. And this is a fun song. It's not brilliant by any means, nor is anything else on here. That is also why I can't give this more than a 7, but we'll get back to that rating bit after another paragraph in which I describe the other good songs and make mention of the misfires if there are any. I also may include a brief word about Leah, because she's on my mind.

Elsewhere on here, Rag Top is a fine car song, Rock 'N' Roll Angel is a title that makes me think of Leah but isn't my favorite song on here, the opening song is pretty decent...ok, it's all decent, and it's all very similar. Each song has a different stylistic emphasis...ok, I do have to mention My Daddy Was A Milkman. That one's good, and a real rocker. This really is such an even listen. Nothing's bad, nothing ever is more than just good. Fun but not outstanding debut from the boys from Kentucky.

ELECTRIC BARNYARD (1991)

(reviewed by Kevin Baker)

I really don't know why I've been in such a "good time boogie" mood for the last few days. I suppose after being lied to, basically dumped, hurt by others, and walloped with a migraine-like headache, I definitely needed a break. However, I'll never hear from Ashley again (thank God), Leah's out of town (that gives me time to figure out how I'm going to tell her that...well, I'll leave that for tomorrow's review of whatever cd I yank out), and my head feels fine. So, I'm purty good ta go at the moment.

Yeah, I do feel the necessity to talk like a hick when I listen to a cd featuring a song called It's Chitlin' Time. Who wouldn't? Now, that song is......not among my favorites here. It has no hook or real attraction, and if you're going to play rootsy stuff, you hafta know how hook a listener to avoid being generic. Chitlin' Time fails because of that. However, they do make The Ballad Of Davy Crockett (no joke!) into a pretty good country rocker, with an emphasis on the "rocker" part. There's more of an emphasis on the rock aspect of their sound here, which definitely makes this more listenable. There's also a lot more bluesy overtones as well. And, out of nowhere, they cover Spirit In The Sky! And it's good, too!

Once again, nothing is revolutionary, and nothing really rises above the crowd, except for Davy Crockett and Spirit In The Sky. On the latter, I do like how they rewrote the verse to be "yeah, I've been a sinner, yes I have sinned".....at long last, biblical truth in this song! I could go off on a tangent here, but I'll refrain. My judgment is once again that while this stuff is all at least listenable, nothing's great. However, this time it's not quite as fun.
