BLUE OYSTER CULT

US Unwired Stage in Lake Charles, Louisiana, May 6th, 2001

(reviewed by Caleb Smith)

I've never been big into B.O.C, and outside of "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," "Burnin' For You," and "Godzilla," I wasn't really acquainted with their catalog. Yet we never get any good shows down here, and since I like all 3 of the aformentioned songs, I figured it would be cool to go see them.

The show was set to start at 7:30, and we got there a little before 6:30. The opening band (a local band whose name I don't remember) was just finishing up with a fairly cool version of "All Along The Watchtower." Then we had to stand around for an hour and a half, but B.O.C finally came on around 8:00. The first few songs they played I had never heard before, but they were good. The band members said a few were off their upcoming album. The first crowd-pleaser they played was "Burnin' For You," which sounded pretty much like the original version, just a tad heavier. Afterwards, they went into some old songs I had never heard, some new songs I had never heard and then a song from the Imaginos album that I had never heard. That last one, however, really left an impression. The song was quite long, but it was incredibly mesmerizing, and featured some awesome soloing. Unfortunately, I don't know what it was called. Then came "Godzilla," which was introduced with loud footstep sound effects. It was an extended version and lasted somewhere from 10 to 15 minutes, thanks to a long bass solo and an even longer drum solo. Both of which were amazing. Their drummer is really incredible. These guys may be old, but they don't act like it. Finally, there was "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" to finish the night off. This was also an extended version, though not as long as "Godzilla." They played an encore after this, of course, but I didn't see it.

It was a pretty good show. It wasn't too flashy, but they were suprisingly good showmen. If there was anything I didn't enjoy, it was the drunk guys with confederate flags and the standing up for 2 and a half hours, but overall it was quite fun.
