Ha, me and Ben Kramer were doing this same sort of obsessive list not too long ago through IM, and your list actually hits several of my own picks pretty well (and it's also a diverse one, which is good!).  At any rate, here's my list, though these aren't always the ones I rate the highest (though in most cases they are) - a couple of them are more personal favorites:

A = Alice In Chains, B = The Beatles (like you even need to ask), C = The Clash, D = Dream Theater, E = Brian Eno, F = Faith No More, G = Genesis, H = Jimi Hendrix, I = Iron Maiden, J = Jane's Addiction (or maybe Joy Division), K = The Kinks, L = Led Zeppelin, M = Metallica, N = Neutral Milk Hotel, O = Ozzy Osbourne, P = Pink Floyd, Q = Queensryche, R = R.E.M., S = hmm... Smashing Pumpkins, maybe?, T = Talking Heads, U = U2, V = Velvet Underground, W = The Who, X = XTC, Y = Yes, Z = most probably Frank Zappa, though I haven't heard too much from him.

Ooo, I'm a compulsive list-maker too. This is fun!

A - Alice in Chains; B - The Beatles; C - Creedence Clearwater Revival; D - The Doors; E - Emerson, Lake & Palmer; F - Fleetwood Mac (I guess); G - Guns N' Roses; H - Jimi Hendrix; I - INXS; J - Billy Joel; K - The Kinks; L - Living Colour; M - Midnight Oil; N - Nirvana; O - Overkill; P - The Police; Q - Queen; R - R.E.M.; S - Steely Dan; T - Talking Heads; U - U2; V - Van Halen; W - The Who; X - XTC; Y - Yes; Z - Don't have one, but I'd probably like Zappa if I'd hear more.

becca's bands by letter

a- a perfect circle, maynard is just an amazing vocalist and the groups style isn't cookie-cutter defineable (like metallicas or nine inch nails)

b- bad religion. screw their popular stuff...broken and epiphany are great.

c- cake. c is kind of a weak letter

d- DREAM THEATER. no description needed.

e- elvis presley. not exactly rock or anything, but the guy broke barriers and is great

f- i have no words for f...but if i had to choose, jimmy fallon, yeah his one song wasn't exactly 'music' but is funny as hell

g- guns 'n' roses, though i haven't heard many other g's...

h- jimi hendrix. this was no competition

i- iron maiden. AMAZING guitar riffs, and also, their album covers are so creative

j- jethro tull i keep hearing good things about. i haven't heard too much of their stuff, but they are solid

k- no real good bands...the kinks are okay

l- led zeppelin. i'm not into stairway to heaven and don't really like them, but they are good

m- megadeth. it would've been metallica, but no. usually it's just the music that matters...but the whole mp3 thing and the o3 sanitarium choices...they are lame. megadeth is good and not just screaming.

n-tough tough. nine inch nails or nirvana? they are both great, but nirvana is too much about cobain. NINE INCH NAILS are great....hurt and march of the pigs are some of their finest

o- with o...you're left with bands like offspring and ok go. there's alwayz ozzy, but he bit the head of animals and thats disgusting. so.....i'd have to say in a crunch i'd pick ok go

p- pink floyd. they're just really good.

q- QUEENSRYCHE. possibly the strongest band of it's era, queensryche is phenomenal. the singer has a great voice and the instrumental is solid.

r- rancid. they aren't exactly rock, but rancid is a great band with respectable guitar and unique lyrics.

s- system of a down. yeah yeah they get a lot of criticism, but soad's singer has a really good voice that's hard to match and they have some very different songs (they don't always sound exactly the same.)

t- tool. dark and angry grunge that sounds good. you know they're just about the music because they try to hid their visual image (videos, live shows in disguise

u- :/ kind of weak. unwritten law sounds ok...

v- van halen. eddie is amazing on guitar and incorporates many different things in his playing (2hand tapping..etc)

w- wheatus. just because they have such an...odd sound and their singer can go so high that it's hilarious to listen to

x- xtc, although they do have some vocal problems and are very inconsistent, for the most part they are good, and hey...when you're looking at 'x', what else is there?

y- i haven't heard anything from y, but i have heard alot about yes.

z- same with z. but i have to be really out there and choose rob zombie, just because he directed a movie.
