When games collide with movie makers - 3/7/2004
What happens when the film industry gets more interested in video games, asks Daniel Etherington of BBC Collective in his weekly games column.

Martin Edmondson, founder of Reflections Interactive Software and creator of the Driver games, thinks that driving and shooting games are popular as they "allow you to recreate some of the classic movie moments from famous car chases, in an environment where you won't lose your licence."

Mexican air force pilots film a possible UFO - 12/5/2004
The video, filmed by pilots using an infrared camera, shows 11 bright objects moving rapidly in the sky.

The objects were reported to be invisible to the eye, so the pilots turned on the infrared camera to track them after three of them were picked up by the radar.

"We are not alone! This is so weird," one of the pilots can be heard saying after the radar picked up the objects.

The video was filmed by air force members in March as they conducted a routine anti-drug trafficking surveillance flight over the coastal region of Campeche.

Happy St. George's day! - 23/4/2004
St. George is one of the most popular Christian saints ever to have existed and has been venerated at different times in every Christian tradition, Eastern & Western. He even finds a place too in Islamic Hagiography, that gives him the honoured title of "Prophet".

He is best known as the slayer of the dragon and saviour of the maiden, and is the patron saint of England, and St. George's day is celebrated on April 23rd every year.

George later went on to become patron saint of Venice, Genoa, Portugal and Catalonia.

So happy St. George's day to all of you!!

Tomorrow, Sunday April 11th, the TOCA BTCC 2004 season finally gets under way at Thruxton. The British Touring Car Championship is bigger and better this year with more official manufacturer entries and a television deal with live air time on ITV1.

Today Vauxhall team mates James Thompson and Yvan Muller qualified in 1st and 2nd place, with Thompson's pole position lap being a superb one minute 16.747 seconds.

Because of a change in the rules to make the BTCC more enjoyable for viewers, there will be races each weekend, and if you're in the UK, you can watch tomorrow's action live on ITV1 from 3:00PM.

Image © BBC

On April 5th and 6th the first ever UK Robot Football Championships will take place with the University of Plymouth playing the University of Warwick. The event takes place as preparation for the University of Warwick before they compete in the European Robot-Soccer Championships 2004, which will be held on the 15th - 18th June in Munich, Germany.

Caroline Browne who is part of the team developing the robots for the University of Warwick said: "The home side is confident as we have spent the last 6 months developing our champion robots - super-intelligent boxes on wheels that can recognise colour and pack a good kick."

In this league, two teams of five 7.5 cm cubic robots play with an orange coloured ball on an internationally specified pitch, and try to score as many goals as possible.

The tournament is designed to give a fun approach to learning about robots working in groups.

497m Euro fine for Microsoft from European Commission
Microsoft has been ordered to pay a fine of 497m Euros by the European Commission for preventing competition. The debate is partly over Microsoft not revealing secrets of its Windows software, used on 90% of the worlds PC's, and partly with MediaPlayer software included with Windows which some feel removes competition from competitors such as RealOne. A lot of people disagree with this and feel it will only make using a PC harder if you have to install separate software after buying a computer. This can be especially hard for people not computer literate, the very people that the government wants to have better access to computers, and is a hassle for others.

Microsoft is has already lodged an appeal which could take years to settle.

Assessment of current UK computer crime law
The All Party Parliamentary Internet Group will inquire as to weather current computer crime laws need changing as the Computer Misuse Act 1990 is over ten yeas old.

"Fourteen years on the technological advance and increasing sophistication of the Internet has outstripped its capacity to deal with the generality of e-crime adequately." The Earl of Northesk, Member of APIG.

The main inquiry focus will be as follows:
· Is the CMA broad enough to cover crime encountered today
· Have the CMA's generic definitions of computers and data have stood the test of time
· Are there are "loopholes" in the Act that can be filled
· What changes need to be made to meet our international treaty obligations
· Are the penalties listed in the CMA sufficient to deter today's criminals

MJ-Racer Converter
Over the summer I did a bit of programming in Visual Basic, and after a lot of effort, I created the MJ-Racer Converter. This handy program converts between units of measurement for nine different categories of units, such as length, speed, weight etc, and has a short term save function so that you can print several conversions at once.

Porsche 911 GT3
I started this project back in the autumn as a break from my other projects, and I have added a bit to it every now and again, but I haven't worked on it for quite a while due to my very limited free time. The latest work that I've done to it is starting the wheels, which are quite complicated.

Currently the Porsche 911 GT3 has 5102 polygons in the condition shown in the picture.

Stunt ramp
My first MM2 car release, finally. The ramp's unique shape means that it can cut through traffic with ease, and in multiplayer games you can use it to get a team mate into the air, or a competitor off the road. Unfortunately it's a bit slow though, so think carefully of when you'll get an advantage.

Link to MJ-Racer
If you have your own website you can use this piece of HTML to add a link to the MJ-Racer website. If the image is too big for your site just change the height and width numbers (in the same proportion). Best results will probably be achieved if you halve, or quarter the dimensions, rather than change them by odd amounts. This is the code you need to put into your webpage.
