Started Life in 1977 when Ian Craig Marsh and Martin Ware joined forces. Starting off calling themselves the "Dead Daughters" did their own thing but changed their name to "The Future". With the joining of Phil Oakey came another final name change to "The Human League". The 1978 line up included Adrian Wright who replaced Andy Newton who left just after their namechange. Signing up to "Fast product" record label in Edinburgh they had their first hit "being boiled" which sold over 16,000 copies and also attracted the interest of "Virgin records". "Reproduction" was their first album and with Phil Oakeys look and style he became the focal point of the group. At the end of 1980 there was a fall out which saw Marsh and Ware leave and go on to create "Heaven 17". Bizzarley, Oakey chose two teenage girls who he met in a nightclub as their replacements even though they had no experience at all. They were Joanne Catherall and Susan Sulley. Also bringing in Jo Collins (former Rezillos) Hits in 1981 included Boys and girls, The sound of the crowd, Love action, Open your heart and the awesome "Dont you want me baby" which was a christmas no1 and the biggest selling uk single of 1981. |
