This is the final "crowd pleaser" scene (in a tomb) where everyone is shown dead on the stage. I think Mrs. Cole said she considered having Tybalt and Mercutio also laying there, dead in the tomb for the final scene, but it was a lot to deal with. Anyway Paris and Romeo sword fight, Paris is killed, Romeo poisons himself, Juliet stabs herself, and there is the final gory scene, so crowd-pleasing to the Shakespearian audience. (I think it was the ancient Greek tragedies where it was considered bad taste for anyone to die on stage, so they usually died off-stage. Not so the Elizabethans!). The Contessa returns, and chastises everyone (including herself) for their silly mistakes.
Curtain call, many huzzahs, and everyone goes home happy!
