DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE
What is biomedical science?
Biomedical science is a continually changing, dynamic profession with long-term career prospects including management, research, education and specialised laboratory work.
Here you will study life processes to gain an understanding of health and the principles of disease. Subjects covered are broadly similar to the pre-clinical components of a medical programme with the addition of advance subjects such as molecular biology, radiobiology, ergonomics, nutritional biochemistry and on the effect of industrial activities upon our health and the environment.
In other words, biomedical science is the application of biology-based science to benefit medical science. As 21st century medicine and healthcare becomes increasingly sophisticated, the demand grows for highly skilled biomedical scientists capable of performing research to cater the needs in these areas and provide new and essential information for improving medical science and other health aspects. Biomedical scientists aid in the evaluation of the effectiveness of laboratory diagnosis, and contribute in research into the causes and cures of diseases.
Biomedical Science in IIUM
Here at IIUM, the Department of Biomedical Science is an active and growing department with strong foundations in research and teaching.
At this moment, the department is involved in basic and applied medical science research whereby the findings are incorporated into the curriculum. This objective aims towards getting the students to foster a research culture that is essential for the development of the nation.
We have facilities for the study and teaching of the wide range of subjects considered to be essential aspects of modern biomedical science including:
 molecular biology
 human genetics
 microbiology
 biochemistry
 physiology
 anatomy
 parasitology and entomology
 radiobiology
 biostatistics
 immunology
 pharmacology
 toxicology
 haematology and oncology
 pathology
We offer the programme Bachelor of Biomedical Science (BBiomedSc [Hons])
There are 5 areas of concentration:
1. Environmental Health
2. Clinical and Pharmaceutical Research
3. Telehealth
4. Industrial Health
5. Laboratory Management and Technology.
Career opportunities
Opportunities are abundant in both the public and private sectors. To cite the most obvious choices, graduates can find executive or research positions in hospitals, clinical and pharmaceutical companies, educational institutions, medical research institutions, diagnostic laboratories, environmental health sectors, telehealth services, quality control departments and production units.
