This interesting small creature (which most people know by its lifeless form on the road after some bad luck with a car the night before) is usually dismissed as unworthy of attention. Personally, I like this tenacious survivor of both country and city environments. Possum has a long pointed face and a hairless tail. They are of the marsupial family, so they carry their young in a pouch. If a mother is run over you often see the road scattered with all the tiny babies. Lucky for the species this animal is a prolific breeder and the female has quite a large litter.
I have been thinking about the possum lately because it seems a group has moved into the wall space quite near my bed. Every night about three they come back to their nest, usually making quite a racket. At first I was very disturbed by their racket but now actually enjoy the company and will miss them as the owner of the house has called the Humane Society to have them trapped and sent back to the country.
