The proof that Okiya is not Akai
Since Okiya has shown up in Detective Conan, many voices started to claim without any proof that Okiya is Akai. After careful revision of all Akai and Okiya's appearances, the only similarities that I could find between Okiya and Akai are (1) the fact that both are left handed, (2) the fact that Haibara becomes uneasy when they stare at her, (3) and the fact that Ran feels that she has seen them before. As for being left handed, many left handed people have shown up in Detective Conan, and one may even say that it is normal to be left handed in Detective Conan. As for Haibara's fears, Haibara is a girl who tries to appear to be strong where in fact she gets scared from her own shadow. In other words, there is no logical meaning for her fears. Finally, Ran sees a lot of people everyday, so if she did see Okiya before, that does not mean necessarily that he is Akai. He could be anyone.
Having said that, there are many differences that can be observed between Okiya and Akai.
- Okiya has apparently brown or blond hair like Haibara, while Akai has black hair.
- Okiya has small eyes (like Japanese people), while Akai has big eye (like people in the anime)
- Akai wears a hat, but Okiya does not
- Furthermore, the eye glasses which Okiya wears, seems to be expensive... You think an FBI agent who gets no salary (due to death) can afford to buy it?
- Okiya seems to be as intelligent as Shinichi and good in observing little things, and moreover he is obsessed with Sherlock Holmes. On the other hand, there is nothing to tell us about Akai's intelligence, as all he can do is to come at the very last moment to shoot with his gun. In fact, we only know that he is a silver bullet, because the boss of Black Organization says so.
- Okiya drinks alcohol, where as Akai smokes cigarettes.
Rebuttal to some arguments
Many arguments defending the theory that Akai is Okiya have come to surface in response to my proof. The most popular argument claims that Akai disguised himself into Okiya in order to change his appearance. From Akai's past, we know that he has never disguised before. And even if he did disguise with the help of someone (say Kaito Kid for example), Conan would be able to tell who he is soon enough. Unfortunately, Conan only views Okiya as a big fan of Sherlock Holmes.
Another argument says that Akai still has money in the bank from his previous work with FBI even though he is not receiving any salary from them after his death. However, we know that when someone is reported to be dead, his money goes to his inheritors, or to the government in case has no inheritors. Either case, Akai's bank's accounts should be closed by now, and he should have no means to access his money.
In addition, some people claim that Akai can squint forever in order to create the Japanese-like effect on his eyes. It's very clear that this saying is wrong, because you can't observe little things when you squint. And Okiya has proven that he's very good in noticing little things that normal people (with Anime-like eyes) can't see.
In response to my 5th observation about Okiya's intelligence, many say that Akai is very intelligent because he was able to deceive the Black Organization for long time, and he figured out who the fake patient is, not to mention that he helped Conan in putting up a plan to let Rena be saved by the Organization. This argument has many flaws. First being very good as a spy does not necessarily mean that he is good as a detective. Second, Akai could not figure out who the fake patient was with out the help of Conan. Third, we don't know if Akai did really help Conan in putting up that plan. Maybe he is just like Kogoro, giving the credit for himself.
A funny argument says that since Okiya was found to be the red guy on his first appearance, and since Akai means "Red" in Japanese, then Okiya is Akai. I say this is just coincidence, not to mention that being red was a kid's idea. If we were to take that seriously, then the guy who was found to be "Black guy" should be a member in the Black Organization.
