This is my most resent box. I had no plans for who I'd give it to so my mom decided to help me decide. She now keeps the box on a shelf along with her collection of ceramic dolls. One of her excuses for possesing the box was that it fit the hand mirror I made her for christmas inside it perfectly. This happened completely by chance. I began building this box once Mr. Pickard (my wood shop teacher) decided to give me the peice of wood that is now the centerpiece for the top. I had originally planed to make another hand mirror out of it but couldn't stand to see all the scrap go to waist so once I finished the top, I showed it to Mr. Pickard and he decided to let me use another of his finest peices of wood. I was extremely limited with the peices I could actually use since I wanted the grain to continue all the way around the box. This required that I get a long board, approx. 53". It was all basically over once I picked out the right board. That's a breif outline of what it took to build a box like this.
types of wood: figurtive maple, maple burow, decorative strips, peduk, purple heart.
PS. My cat has nocked over the box and permanently ruined the hinges. I found the box on the ground just over the cat's favorite resting place, with the top of the box dismembered. The left hindge was pulled of and all the nails were missing. Thankfully i was able to salvage the hinge and box with only a few new dents, a deminished glossy finish, and bent hindges. If only a cat could appreciate such beautiful work the box would not now be holding a grudge against the cat. Did i say the box I meant me. Don't worry I still love the cat.
