Civil Disobedience – Lesson Plan

1. Working in groups, learn more about these activists:

2. Read in your books:  from Civil Disobedience – page 369

Read in your books:  On Civil Disobedience – page 377

Read in your books:  Stride Toward Freedom – page 301

Letter from Birmingham Jail  - http://www.sas.upenn.edu/African_Studies/Articles_Gen/Letter_Birmingham.html

Read in your books:  Protect Ourselves Malcolm X – page 305

Read:   Ken Saro-Wiwa:  Ogoni Bill of Rights:  http://www.pbs.org/newamericans/2.0/nigeria/sarowiwa2.htm

3. Create a concept web, chart, or paper to compare and contrast these individuals. What was each man fighting for? What methods did he use? What were the consequences, personally and for the larger community?

4. Write a journal entry, or letter about one of the activists you researched. How do you feel about this person's struggle? Did it change your  opinions about what you would do, in a similar situation? Did it change your opinion about "acceptable" forms of resistance?
