INTRODUCTION |
For a true writer each book should be a new beginning where he tries again for something that is beyond attainment. He should always try for something that has never been done or that others have tried and failed. Then sometimes, with great luck, he will succeed.
Ernest Hemingway, in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech
US author & journalist (1899 - 1961)

TASK |
You want to see the world as Hemingway saw it. Your task is to create the most reasonably priced around-the-world itinerary to all of the places that Hemingway once visited. You will start at Hemingway's hometown, Oak Park, Illinois. Then, your visits will begin in San Sebastián, Pamplona and Madrid in Spain. The trip will then take you to Paris, France and Venice, Florence and Rome in Italy. The trip will include Kenya, Africa with a tour of Mt. Kilamajaro and also a safari (remember, Hemingway loved hunting) and from there will take you to Cuba (he also enjoyed fishing). The trip will conclude when returning to the United States, to Ketchum, Idaho. Your itinerary should include: the total cost of the trip, highlighted facts about each place, places you plan to visit and the cost, how things have changed since Hemingway was at that location, methods of transportation, mileage and cost, hotel lodging and cost, and a brief explanation of the country's government, the country's currency, etc. In pairs you will put this information into a travel brochure or booklet.

PROCESS |
TRAVEL BROCHURE
1. You will determine the most logical order for your trip and document this order in your itinerary.
2. You will decide on the means of transportation and check out costs.
3. You will decide on hotels to stay at, the nights you wish to stay in each place and document the cost.
4. If you wish to book any extra tour at a specific location, you have to decide on that, too.
5. You will have to decide on the daily itinerary, what places (tourist attractions)you will be visiting and what you wish to see there.
FINALLY, in pairs you will create your travel brochure including all basic information and costs.
POWERPOINT PRESENTATION (you have one week to do this)
1. With your pair you will research on one of the following places to inform the group about: tourist attractions, festivals, activities, sporting attractions, etc.
a) Oak Park, Illinois
b) San Sebastian
c) Pamplona
d) Madrid
e) Paris
f) Rome
g) Florence
h) Venice
i) Kenya - Mt. Kilamajaro
j) African Safari
k) Cuba
l) Ketchum, Idaho
JOURNAL
You will keep an individual journal of your trip. Here should keep a record of all costs, sights, and activities. You should write down the favorite foods you have eaten at each place, including the name of the restaurants as well as the tourist attractions that you have visited and what you liked most. You will write about any sporting events that you have attended and animals that you may have seen - remember: you are going to the bull fights, on a safari in Africa and fishing in Cuba. You may also want to mention any souvenirs that you would like to bring home.

CONCLUSION |
Hemingway spent much of his life outside of the United States. He visited Italy, France, Cuba, Africa, and Spain. With the book "The Sun Also Rises" you will focus on his life in Paris and Spain. In addition, you will have had the opportunity to research on all the places Hemingway visited by using the Internet and other reference materials. All of Hemingway's experiences of visits to festivals and activities, which will become your own, will help you to write creatively.
