The Making of My Backyard Pond

I started my pond June 2001. It was what I called "My relaxation project". I must say that at times it was not so relaxing but for most of the time it was an adventure, especially the digging part, and a learning process, still is.

<<This was originally a 8x8 sandbox for my children but since they were no longer using it I got the great idea of turning it into a pond.
First step after digging and leveling out the ground was to place the liner nice and smoothly. I had a few rocks around and started collecting more. I would place them every so often. I drove my husband crazy for a little while because when ever we would go for a drive and I would see rocks, I would ask him to stop so we could pick up a few (sometimes more than a few..haha).                        >>>>>
Next was to put in the pump and to figure out where I wanted to place the waterfall. I think the most frustrating part was to find the proper piece to attach to the pump for the hosing of the waterfall. With help from my son and my husband we succeeded to find something at the hardware store and converted it.

I kept adding those rocks and it was great to see it looking more like a pond each time I did.  I then added some artificial flowers in between the rocks and a few aquatic plants in the water. By this point I had also put a few fish in the pond. I purchased 2 Koi's ,3 Shubunkin's and an Algie Eater, which we never saw until it was time to remove the water in the fall.

Then I got this great idea to add some lights. Which meant that I had to wire in between the rock. This was fun!! After a few hours of taking deep breaths and reminding myself that this was suppose to be my RELAXATION project this is  what the end result looked like.

July 2002
I saw this swing at the store and it was perfect timing. I had just finished the pond and it was time to RELAX . I have placed other chairs and a bench around the pond for everyone to enjoy.  I must say this was one of my best Ideas yet. I enjoy sitting outside on a lovely summer evening with my cup of tea, just listening to the water fall and watching the fish come up to say hello from time to time.
<<This picture was taken during the winter. I had to bring them inside because I did not dig deep enough for them to be able to survive the winter here. They need at least 3 feet to be left outside, when the water freezes over.I wish I would have done more research but I also do get to enjoy them during the winter months.

The fish are doing great! They have grown so much that they will be needing more room, so I will have to give them away this fall.
I've added a rock garden on each side of the pond and other flowers around the area.  It now looks like a real pond. Each day is a new adventure and that is what I enjoy the most about it.

My neighbour's daughter, Keana, loves the pond. She comes over nearly daily to feed the fish.  They are very well fed !
