1 A.G.

The year was sometime late in the 21st century, no one can remember now because the war had been raging so long.  The two sides, The Government For A Better World, or  the GFABW, and the United Revolutions of a New Enlightenment, or URONE.  Now that the war was finaly nearing an end it looked like both sides had suffered enough casulaties to call it a draw, but the URONE wouldn't give up.  The battle of Krondor/Boston had ended in a massive defeat for them, but they were on the rise again.  They had invaded the surounding territories and the remaining troops formed one band of mauraders named the 29th,  they only had 7 soldiers in all, and they were looking for a place to stay.  They found a building and that seemed abandoned, but as they walked in though they were attacked by several Machines, the GFABW's main attack force.
The machines were large humanoid robots with a red metalic color.  They were capable of AI to an extent, but only enough to formulate strategies, not to understand the conflicts of the mind and soul.  They were a perfect, inexpensive soldier, capable of mass destruction.  These drones were sent out en masse to extinguish the URONE.
The URONE armies consisted of 20 seperate classes, or jobs, Squire, Chemist, Knight, Archer, Monk, Thief, Geomancer, Lancer, Dancer, Priest, Wizard, Oracle, Time Mage, Mediator, Summoner, Bard, Samurai, Ninja, Calculator, and Mime.  Although some of these may sound normal and unimportant, all have played a critical role in this war.
"Come on guys, let's go, we can beat these bastards.  It's the last Machine, we can take it," that was  John Gart, the leader of the URONE 29th platoon.  His forces consisted of 6 others, Greg (the alchemist), Bobby (the ninja), Jan (the white mage), Kary (the female knight), Trey (the black mage), and Anneke (the summoner).  John himself was a knight.  His full platoon had once been 26 strong, but they had lost their lives at the battle of Krondor/Bostonand the battles that ensued.  Now they were the last left in this area.  The group was quickly loosing morale and things weren't looking so great anymore.  Kary was poisoned and they were out of all thier supplies, Greg was mortally wounded and it didn't look like he had much left to give, his last 3 spells had failed.  Bobby, Jan, and Trey well all too tired to do anything to the Machines, they had been up for 48 hours already and they were welcoming death, ready to die for their cause, even if the cause died off with them.  The group was falling.  John made the order to pull back, but the Machine jumped at them, cutting off Anneke's left arm, in mid-summon.  She fell to the ground, unable to move, terror and the realization of the grim reality had fallen over her.  John saw a breif flash of his comerades laying in the dirt, dead.  He couldn't let this happen, as a knight and as their friend.  He drew upon every ounce of strength he had and let go of his emotions. He focused all of his energy on the blade of his oil stained sword.  His sword began to glow with a white light, it cut through the air and the crackle of lightening could be heard in the distance.  He was ready to perform his final blow to the Machine army.  He ran straight at the Machine.  It stuck out its claw and ran John through as he ran towards it.  John was beyond pain now though, he was ready to avenge.  He continued his dash to the metal beast.  He fell near the beast but his sword cut the Machines wires that enabled it to move its legs.  Lightening arced from the ceiling, the beast, capable of AI knew what was happening.  It tried to back off, but John's strike was true.  A bolt of white light shot town from the rafters of the building, shortcircuiting the bot.  It shook and the shut down.  Its arm lowered and John limp body slid off it to the ground.  A smile could be seen coming across Trey's face.  The group laid their.  All of their energy gone.  Their bodies would not be found until days later, when the URONE army scouted over the land.  When they found the entire platoon dead, but one, they looked at the battle log in John's bio-implant.  They saw everything, how they fought bravely and destroyed the last of the Machines, they were true hero's although none of them ever knew.  All but Trey, he was the only one with enough energy to survive the long cold nights.  He was taken to the infitmary where he recover fully.  He ensured that a statue was erected in memory of John Gart.  He went on to have full power of the military, and also adopted John's son, named after his father.  John Jr. was born after his father had died and never knew of his real background.  He grew up in the age of dragons and castles.  In the age his father helped build.  In the age of enlightenment.
