Parent Handbook

Welcome to kindergarten!  We are happy to have your child in our class.  We feel your child’s first experience at Forestville Road Elementary will be a positive one, and we look forward to working with you and your child this year.  This parent handbook is filled with information that will help you and your child have a great start.

School Hours
School begins at 9:15 and ends at 3:45.  Students may enter the building any time after 8:45 to prepare for the day.  Children should not arrive on campus before 8:45 unless they are enrolled in the Early Arrivals Program.  If you (or someone else) drop off your child in the morning or you are on campus, please do not let your child come into the building nor into the classroom unless it is after 8:45.

Your child is tardy if he/she comes to school after 9:15. When your child is tardy, you must go to the office and get a tardy slip. After you have signed the tardy log and received a tardy slip, please bring your child to class.

If you check out your child early (anytime before 3:45 is considered early), you should go to the office and sign out your child. The office will call our classroom. One of us will bring your child to the office. If you are going to pick up your child early, please write a note. If we know ahead of time that your child is leaving early, we can gather necessary items and help your child have an easier transition of leaving early.

Illness
We would like to call your attention to the importance of regular school attendance throughout the year.  Please keep sick children at home until they are well enough to spend a whole day in the classroom.  If your child is sick and unable to come to school, please call. Please state your child’s name, grade, and teacher on the machine. When a child returns to school after any absence, he/she should bring a written excuse!  An absence without a written note is counted as unexcused.

Lunch
We eat lunch at 1:17. If you plan to eat lunch with your child, you must first go to the office and get a visitor’s pass. After you get your visitor’s pass, please go to the cafeteria and wait for our class to come. You are always welcome to join us for lunch; however, please give us a few weeks to establish our routine before visiting.

If your child is bringing her/his lunch to school, please do not send food or drinks in glass containers! Glass can be very dangerous; therefore, children are not allowed to handle any type of glass at school.

Children who buy lunch from the cafeteria are responsible for keeping their lunch money. To eliminate the necessity of having your child carry money every day, you may pre-pay school lunch by the week or month. Since lunch payments are computerized, no money on your child’s lunch plan is lost if your child is absent or chooses to bring lunch.

  Snack
Since we eat lunch at 1:17, your child may bring a healthy snack (fruit, cheese, crackers, etc.) to eat in the morning. Since the children will not store their snacks in a refrigerator, please only send snacks that require no refrigeration!

Transportation
You are asked to let us know how your child gets to and from school.  If your child’s transportation is going to change, it is important that you write a note. If your child is normally a bus rider and she/he is going to be a walker, car rider, van rider, or go to the after school program, please write a note.  If your child is normally a van rider and she/he is going to be a walker, car rider, bus rider, or go to the after school program, please write a note.  If your child is normally a car rider and she/he is going to be a walker, van rider, bus rider, or go to the after school program, please write a note.  If your child is normally a walker and she/he is going to be a car rider, bus rider, van rider, or go to the after school program, please write a note.  If your child normally goes to the after school program and she/he is going to be a car rider, bus rider, walker, or van rider, please write a note. If we do not have written communication that your child will go home a different way, she/he will be sent home the way she/he normally goes home.

Folders

We will send home folders every Monday (or every other Monday). The folder will contain your child’s work and school related information. You are to keep the work (unless otherwise indicated), sign the parent signature sheet, and return the parent signature sheet in your child’s folder.

The cost of buying and laminating weekly folders is very expensive! When the weekly folder goes home, please help your child be responsible by returning it on Tuesday. Sometimes we might send the folders home on a different day. If so, please return the folder the next school day.

School Supplies

You are asked to provide the following school supplies. Please do not write your child’s name on the facial tissue, 2-pocket folders, Ziploc bags, dry erase marker nor the baby wipes.

  • Backpack (no wheels)
Your child will need a backpack that he/she can open and close. The backpack should be large enough to fit a 12x18 manilla folder.

  • 1 box of Ziploc bags
    (Boys: Quart-size      Girls: Gallon-size)

  • Bath towel
We will rest daily. Since we are limited in the amount of storage space for each student, please send a bath towel instead of a rest mat. We will send the towel home on Friday so you may launder it. Please send the towel back to school on Monday.

  • Extra clothes
It is important for your child to be prepared for school by having some extra clothes in her/his cubby. The extra clothes will be used if your child has an accident (water spill, paint spill, etc.). Send the extra clothes in a large zip-loc bag. Make sure your child’s name is written on the bag.

Labeling Items
Please help your child keep track of her/his belongings by labeling clothes or other valuables. It is hard to give property back to the correct owner if no identification can be found on the item.

Money

On occasions it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school (for lunch, field trips, book orders, etc.). When sending money to school, please place it in a sealed envelope clearly marked with the following information.

  • Your child’s first and last name

  • Amount of money enclosed

  • Purpose of the money (lunch, milk money, etc.)

Homework

Homework should be done every day.  Right now the following activities should make up your child’s homework. As the school year progresses, homework will change.

  • Read to your child every day.  Ask questions about what was read.  By asking questions about what was read, you can see if your child actually understood the story.

  • Ask your child about her/his day.  Have your child tell you about the things she/he learned for the day.

  • Help your child prepare for his/her sharing day.  You can use ideas from the sharing sheet or develop something yourself.

  • Have your child read the books he/she has made in class.

Periodically, we will send home skill sheets for your child to complete.  Whenever a skill sheet goes home, your child should do the work and return the skill sheet on Friday.

Book Club
You will be given the opportunity to order books from a book club during the school year.  Whenever a book order is sent home, you will have three to five days to send money (cash or check) and an order form.  When your child brings her/his order form and money, you will receive a receipt.  If you send your money and don’t receive a receipt, please write us a letter.
