Poems/Songs

Dr. King
(Tune: "Yankee Doodle")

Dr. King was a man who had a special dream.
He dreamed of a world filled with love and peace and harmony.
Happy Birthday, Dr. King,
Happy Birthday to you.
Happy Birthday, Dr. King,
We love you, yes, we do.

Freedom Freedom Let It Ring
(Tune: "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star")

Freedom, Freedom let it ring.
"Let it ring," said Dr. King.
Let us live in harmony
Peace and love for you and me
Freedom, Freedom, let it ring.
"Let it ring," said Dr. King

Activities

A lot of activities that I do involve reading books about Dr. King and discussing what is in the book since children at this age have a hard time understanding.

Begin a discussion about Dr. King by giving each student a red and a green M&M. Tell them to close their eyes and eat one of the M&M's. Then, tell them to eat the other M&M. Once the children have eaten both M&M's, ask if they could tell what color M&M they ate first. Stress that people are just like the M&M's: We are all different colors on the outside, but we are all the same on the inside.

Dr. King's Special Dream
I Can Make It! I Can Read It!      Winter Edition

Dr. King had a dream for people everywhere.
He dreamed of peace.
He dreamed of friendship and freedom for all to share.

This poem was made into a book.
On each page, the children had to complete the picture, draw a picture, or color a picture.

Kindness Bulletin Board

Have the children brainstorm different ways they can show kindness. Give each child a paper that has the silhouette of a person on it. The children will decorate the person in his/her image. At the bottom of the paper, the child will write (or dictate) how she/he show kindness. Mount the pictures on a bulletin board.

Talk about Dr. King's dream for the world. Give each children some white paper that has been cut into the shape of a cloud. Let the children draw a picture of their dream and illustrate. The pictures/writings could be placed in a book or made into a bulletin board.

Dr. King believed that we are all the same and should be treated equally. Read the book We Are All Alike...We Are All Different.  As a class, brainstorm the different ways that people are alike (Ex.-We like pizza. We all have a skeleton inside our body. We have two eyes. We have one nose. etc.) Give each child a pattern of a person. They will decorate the person in their image. After decorating the person, the children will write a sentence about how the people in our class are alike. Display on a bulletin board.
