Activities |
||||||
| A lot of activities that I do involve reading books about Dr. King and discussing what is in the book since children at this age have a hard time understanding. | ||||||
| Begin a discussion about Dr. King by giving each student a red and a green M&M. Tell them to close their eyes and eat one of the M&M's. Then, tell them to eat the other M&M. Once the children have eaten both M&M's, ask if they could tell what color M&M they ate first. Stress that people are just like the M&M's: We are all different colors on the outside, but we are all the same on the inside. | ||||||

| Talk about Dr. King's dream for the world. Give each children some white paper that has been cut into the shape of a cloud. Let the children draw a picture of their dream and illustrate. The pictures/writings could be placed in a book or made into a bulletin board. | ||||||
| Dr. King believed that we are all the same and should be treated equally. Read the book We Are All Alike...We Are All Different. As a class, brainstorm the different ways that people are alike (Ex.-We like pizza. We all have a skeleton inside our body. We have two eyes. We have one nose. etc.) Give each child a pattern of a person. They will decorate the person in their image. After decorating the person, the children will write a sentence about how the people in our class are alike. Display on a bulletin board. |
