Activities

I read books about different African Americans. I also use reproducible activities. If possible, I will have the children complete an activity that connects with the person's accomplishments.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Rosa Parks---Read some books about Rosa Parks. Discuss.

Give each child an outline of a bus and a picture of Rosa Parks. He/she will color the bus and the picture of Rosa Parks. The child will glue Rosa Parks' picture at the front of the bus and draw people of different races riding the bus.

Garrett Morgan---Read some books about Garrett Morgan. Discuss.

Make an edible traffic light. Each child will need some Skittles (red, green, & yellow), graham crackers, and peanut butter. Have each child spread the peanut butter on the graham cracker. Then, he/she will place the Skittles in the appropriate spot on the graham cracker to form a traffic light.

Paper traffic light--Each child will need a picture of Garrett Morgan, a black rectangle, two black triangles, and three circles (red, yellow, green). The child will correctly glue the three circles on the rectangle. Then, she/he will glue the two triangles to the rectangle. Put the picture of Garrett Morgan on the top triangle.

Paper clock--Give each child a clock pattern. Let them color. Glue Benjamin Banneker's picture in the middle of the clock.

George Washington Carver---Read some books. Discuss.

Make peanut butter.

After making the peanut butter, give each child some paper that's shaped like a peanut. Have them illustrate the sequence of making peanut butter.

Have the children create a graph to show if they liked the homemade peanut butter.
