saltire

scotlands flag the saltire finds it origines in 832 ad in a battle fought at athelstaneford in easst lothian when the picts under angus mac fergus defeated the larger army of the angles and the saxons

fearrfull of the outcome king angus led prayers for deliverance and was rewarded by seeing a cloud formation of a white saltire (the diagonal cross against which saint andrew has been martyred)against a clear blue sky

the king vowed that if he gained the victory then andrew would be the patron saint of scotland

the scots did win and the saltire became the flag of scotland

the saltire is the oldest flag in europe and maybe in the world
