At some point, we recognize the word, either because they say it more clearly or imply a meaning by pointing or using the word in the right context. The dates listed better reflect our cognizance of their vocabulary rather than the dates of their achievements. Sam and Zoe have been saying "ma" and "mommy" for the longest time, but so far "mommy" means "ma" (give) and "me" (me). "Ma" alone means "I want that". Over time, "ma" transformed to "more" and "mas" (spanish for more). The exact date of this transition was unclear as they still use "ma" to indicate "I want that". They may understand "mommy" as "mommy" but it's so far obscured by these other meanings. "Da" and "daddy" similarly are early words that have meant a variety of things. "Da" in conjunction with pointing means "look at that". When Sam or Zoe say a word, the other learns it soon after, so we'll give them both credit for the words at the same time.*
