  1. Save this file as June to the summer folder.
  2. Create a new file and enter the following text:

In December, we wear our winter clothes. We send our Christmas cards. The children

await the arrival of Santa Claus.

  1. Save this file as December to the summer folder.
  2. Close your text editor.

 

Assignment 2.2

 

  1. Create three more folders named spring, autumn and winter.

Your disk should now contain four separate folders: spring, summer, autumn and

winter.

  1. Load your text editor and enter the following text:

In March, the new lambs are born. Buds appear on the trees. St. Patrick's day is

celebrated all over the world.

  1. Save this file as March to the spring folder.
  2. Close the text editor and load the word processor.
  3. Enter the following text into a new file:

In October, the leaves fall from the trees. We celebrate Halloween. Some birds fly south

before winter.

  1. Save the document as October to the autumn folder.
  2. Close the file and word processor.
  3. Move the December file from the summer to the winter folder.
  4. Close the application (i.e. Windows Explorer)

 

 

Assignment 2.3

 

  1. Load the text editor.
  2. Enter the following text:

 

Formatting

This prepares a blank magnetic disk in order that data can be stored on it. Data is

recorded on a disk's surface on circular tracks, each of which is divided into a number of

sectors. In formatting a disk, the computer's operating system adds control information

such as track and sectors numbers that enables the data stored to be accessed correctly by

the disk drive unit.

  1. Save this file as Format to the Software folder on your disk.
  2. Use your text editor to create a new file.
  3. Enter the following text:

 

DVD

Digital Versatile Disk or Digital Video Disk (DVD) can hold 14 times the data stored on

current CDs. As with CDs, information is etched in the form of microscopic pits onto a

plastic disk, which is then coated with aluminium. A laser reads the disk optically as the

latter rotates.

6.         Save this file as DVD to the Hardware folder on your disk.

7.         Close the file and text editor.

 

Assignment 2.4

 

  1. Create a new folder called Answer on the same disk that was used in the

previous task. Your disk will now contain three separate folders - Answer,

Hardware and Software.

  1. Load your word processor.
  2. Create a new document file.
  3. Enter your name and today's date into this new file.
  4. Save the file as Solution to the new Answer folder. Close the file.
  5. Create a new document file and enter the following text:

 

Installing New Software

To install new software on a Personal Computer, you should click the Start button, select

Settings and choose the Control panel option. Finally, choose the Add/Remove Programs

icon in the control panel.

 

  1. Save this document as Newsoft to the Answer folder.
  2. Close the file and your word processor.
  3. Move the Newsoft file from the Answer to the Software folder.
  4. Create a new folder called Devices on the disk. Your disk will now contain four

separate folders - Answer, Devices, Hardware and Software.

 

 

 

 

Assignment 2.5

 

  1. Find the total capacity of drive C: (on your hard disk) as well as the amounts of

free space and used space.

  1. Load your word processor and open the Solution file stored in the Answer folder

on your disk.

  1. Enter the information learned about drive C: into this file.
  2. Enter a brief explanation, of how you would minimise the application window on

your screen, into the Solution file. Re-save the file.

  1. Close the file and minimise your word processor window.
  2. Create two new folders called Applications and System within the Software folder.
  3. Maximise your word processor window and create a new file.
  4. Enter the following text into this new file:

 

Applications Software

These are programs designed for the benefit of the end-user. There is a wide range of

applications software available. Examples are word processors, spreadsheet packages and

desktop publishing programs.

 

  1. Save this document as a text-only file named APS to the new Applications folder.
  2. Close any applications that are open and shut down the computer in the correct

manner.

 

 

Assignment 2.6

 

  1. Load the text editor.
  2. Enter the following text:

 

Operating System

The operating system is the suite of programs that controls the basic operation of a

computer. A typical operating system controls the peripheral devices such as printers,

organises the filing system, provides a means of communicating with the operator and

runs other programs. Two examples of operating systems are Microsoft's MS-DOS and

Unix.

  1. Save the file as OS to the System folder on your disk.
  2. Change the name of the APS file in the Applications folder to Applics.
  3. Copy the DVD file from the Hardware to the Devices folder. (The same file

should now appear in both folders).

  1. Use the Help function to find out about the taskbar.
  2. Load your word processor and open the Solution file stored in the Answer folder

on your disk.

  1. Enter a brief outline of the purpose the taskbar into this file.
  2. Find the amount of random access memory (RAM) installed in your computer and enter the details into the Solution file.
  3. Re-save the file and exit your word processor.
