Building an extra floor above the Gregory Gym is a very expensive project. Unless more than 51% of the students through a referendum approve to increase the fees paid to the DRS every year, the project can't be finished faster than 3 years after 2011, the year when the bond for the Rec Center is paid off. By the time the project is completed, none of the current students would be able to use it. It is likely that a lot of people will reject the idea of expansion because they won't benefit from it. Although the objection is reasonable, everyone should look further to what the project will bring, not just for them, but for the university as a whole. If it weren't for a proposal similar to this many years ago, we would not be able to use many of the facilities we take for granted today. In fact, as mentioned previously, current students will not be paying for the cost of the project: it will be the upcoming students who will be paying for the bond each year, as it is now for both Rec and the Gregory.
